Medical Director – Northern Care Alliance Diagnostics and Pharmacy

VSM/Medical & Dental

Our new Northern Care Alliance NHS Group unites five local hospitals to deliver high quality care across the North East of Greater Manchester.

The Alliance provides the benefits of scale but delivers this locally through multiple hospital sites which make up four new Care Organisations – Bury/Rochdale, North Manchester, Oldham and Salford. Using our mantra of ‘Saving lives, Improving lives’, the aim is for our Care Organisations to work closely with the communities they serve to deliver safe, high quality and reliable care, which are trusted, connected and pioneering.

Our Care Organisations are designed to operate within our group arrangement of hospitals, community and healthcare services which bring together over 19,000 staff and the services of The Pennine Acute Hospitals NHS Trust and Salford Royal NHS Foundation Trust. Our size and geographical reach means we are creating an environment each individual will be inspired and empowered by to be the best they can be.  This is a really exciting time to join our new team.

Medical Director – Northern Care Alliance Diagnostics and Pharmacy

A new opportunity has arisen within Diagnostics and Pharmacy (D&P) in the Northern Care Alliance for a new Medical Director to join our senior management team.

The Northern Care Alliance (NCA)

Diagnostics and Pharmacy is part of the Northern Care Alliance (NCA), an NHS Group which was formed by bringing together two NHS Trusts; Salford Royal NHS Foundation Trust and The Pennine Acute Hospitals NHS Trust. The NCA provides a range of healthcare services and serves over one million patients per year. The NCA has an operating budget of £1.3bn and 20,000 staff members, making it one of the largest NHS groups in the UK.

Diagnostics and Pharmacy

Radiology, Pathology and Pharmacy services across Salford Royal NHS Foundation Trust and The Pennine Acute Hospitals NHS Trust were brought together across the NCA in September 2018. This represented a significant step in aligning clinical services across the entirety of the NHS Group. D&P supports the three Care Organisations of the NCA: Salford, Oldham and Bury/Rochdale, as well as providing Pathology services to Wrightington, Wigan and Leigh NHS Foundation Trust via a joint venture. Each care organisation has a leadership team of directors who have clear accountability and authority to manage the day to day running of our hospitals and community services and enable the safe delivery of consistent, high quality care.

Diagnostics and Pharmacy has a number of ambitious, strategic plans in terms of aligning, strengthening and empowering D&P services across the NCA. D&P has approximately 1,700 staff and runs services from multiple sites across the NCA. D&P staff are a diverse and highly skilled group, responsible for the delivery of diagnostic services alongside clinical teams, as well as ensuring high standards of medicines management safety.

The Role

The appointment of a Medical Director into the Diagnostics and Pharmacy senior leadership team represents a significant step forward for D&P. It is recognition of the importance of effective clinical leadership in the delivery of D&Ps ambitious plans but also the significant role that clinicians play in D&Ps services. The Medical Director will play a key role in defining and shaping the clinical and corporate governance structures within D&P, working closely with senior leaders across the NCA at care organisation and Executive Board level.

We are looking for someone to join the team who will have a real passion for patient care and medical leadership. As we seek to understand and improve patient pathways, the involvement and engagement of our clinicians will be critical and we need a strong leader to be able to inspire and influence staff at all levels.  Our values (Patient & People Focus, Respect, Accountability, Continuous Improvement) are incredibly important to us and you will be expected to role model these as a senior leader in the organisation.  You will work with the Director of Integrated Governance to drive quality improvement and ensure quality governance is a key part of the everyday within D&P.  You will be a full and active part of the D&P Board and contribute to medical leadership across the wider Northern Care Alliance.

The D&P Medical Director is a demanding and exciting role but it is expected that the successful candidate will retain a clinical service commitment aligned to their area of expertise. This is flexible and can be discussed through the recruitment process.

If you would like to find out more about the role, please contact either Andrew Stallard, D&P Managing Director of Operations on 0161 627 8369 or Chris Brookes, NCA Executive Medical Director on 0161 206 4657.
