Job overview

The Trust currently provides Ophthalmology outpatient services at Oldham Integrated care centre, Rochdale Infirmary and Fairfield General Hospital. All day case surgical activity takes place at Rochdale Infirmary.  This post requires cross-site working, providing outpatient clinics from different sites and surgical work from mainly Rochdale Infirmary.

The advertised posts will complement a team of 11 Consultants, 4 Associate specialists, 2 speciality doctors and 9 Resident Doctors

This appointment 10PAs will be made in accordance with the 2003 Consultant Contract Terms and Conditions. 

We are looking for candidates who are on the Specialist Register / Admission to the Register within 6 months of interview (CCST or CCT in Ophthalmology) or willing to complete the CESR within 12 months of employment.

The Job Description indicates the main duties of the post, which may be reviewed in the light of experience and developments within the service. Any review will be undertaken in conjunction with the post holder.

Main duties of the job

Leadership and development of ophthalmic subspecialty work. The post holder will have a broad knowledge of Ophthalmology, including sub-speciality experience and knowledge of Neuro-ophthalmology and Paediatrics in order to complement existing services.

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Primary medical qualification (eg. MBChB)
  • The appointee will hold the Fellowship of Royal College Of Ophthalmologists or equivalent
Desirable criteria
  • Post Graduate Degree e.g. MD, PhD, MSc
  • Evidence of Accredited Clinical & Educational Supervision of Medical Learners
  • Attainment or working toward higher degree
  • Fellowship level training

Professional Registration

Essential criteria
  • Full registration with the General Medical Council & a valid Licence to Practise with the General Medical Council on appointment or within 6 months of appointment.
  • Hold specialist registration with the GMC Specialist Register in Ophthalmology

Knowledge, Skills and Experience

Essential criteria
  • Clinical expertise and broad knowledge in all aspects of Ophthalmology
  • Demonstrate a commitment to the development of Ophthalmology services
  • Expertise in ophthalmic surgery and independent Cataract Surgery
  • Ability to lead a subspecialty service
  • Understanding the current key issues for the NHS
  • Research Skills: Demonstrates understanding of the basic principles of research
  • Experience of active involvement in Audit (clear description, outcomes & appropriate experience for level of application)
  • Research experience Evidence of relevant peer reviewed papers and other publications (e.g. book chapter, book editor, case report – not abstracts or letters)
  • Presentations (oral or poster) at international, national or regional meetings – not local Meetings
  • Ability to monitor and evaluate the quality and efficiency of service delivery to improve patient care
  • Management: Understanding of project management and preparing a business case
  • Demonstrable team working and leadership skills
  • Good interpersonal skills in order to liaise with Directors, Senior Managers and a variety of external professional bodies.
  • Teaching Proven ability in and willingness to undertake teaching of junior staff & medical students)
  • Good understanding of Clinical Governance
  • Evidence of effective use of Clinical Governance systems (e.g. incident reporting)

Communication

Essential criteria
  • Is empathetic and sensitive to patients needs.
  • Able to explain things clearly – particularly complex or sensitive information.
  • Is able to influence and persuade effectively.
  • All applicants to have demonstrable skills in written and spoken English that are adequate to enable effective communication about medical topics with patients and colleagues which could be demonstrated by one of the following: (1) that applicants have undertaken undergraduate medical training in English; or (2) have the following scores in the academic international English Language Testing System (IELTS) – Overall 7, Speaking 7, Listening 6, Reading 6, Writing 6. , (3) Occupational English Test (OET) certificate it must show: you took the medicine version of the test and you got at least a grade ‘B’ in each testing area (speaking, listening, reading and writing)
  • However, if applicants believe that they have adequate communication skills but do not fit into one of the above examples they need to provide evidence
  • Demonstrable skills in listening, reading, writing and speaking in English that enable effective communication about medical topics with patients and colleagues, as set out in the GMC’s Good Medical Practice (2013)
  • Excellent written & verbal communication skills in order to be able to write & present reports at board level

Teaching

Essential criteria
  • Experience of teaching juniors, medical students and other health care professionals
  • Proven teaching abilities
