Job overview

The post holder will need to provide clear clinical leadership to Staff Nurses and  Nursing Assistants working on the ward. They will need to assist the Unit Manager in  developing and maintaining a service committed to the provision of care for those  individuals who require Low Secure Mental Health Rehabilitation. The post holder will need to actively participate in the day to day running of the unit  and the organisation and development of staff within their sphere of responsibility. 
The post holder will undertake the clinical lead for an allocated number of service  users and ensure that high standards of individualised care is provided, based on  best practice, which is co-produced with service users, their families and carers. 
The post holder will play a key role in ensuring that quality care is provided reflecting  quality drivers from Royal College of Psychiatry Low Secure Unit Standards and Care Quality Commission Standard.

As a charge nurse on you will have the chance to demonstrate leadership in many different clinical situations. Your contribution to the quality of care provided will be valued by the wider multi-disciplinary team. There is support and supervision for further study that relates to secure nursing care including mentorship.

Main duties of the job

Key Responsibilities of the Post:

With the referral team and Responsible Clinician, undertake assessment of patients referred for Low Secure Rehabilitation and feedback as required

Undertake comprehensive, patient-focused, nursing assessment and co-produce care plans in consultation with the service user and their families and carers

Undertake comprehensive risk assessment and formulate risk management plans with Service Users, their families and Carers,

Assist the Unit Manager in developing a service that will ensure that the needs of patients are met with regard to their age, spiritual, cultural, ethnic and sexual orientation

To assist the Unit Manager with the on-going development of the unit

In the absence of the manager, undertake responsibility for the day to day running of the unit

In consultation with the multi-disciplinary team, ensure high standards of individual care for patients and that they are fully consulted and involved in every aspect of their care

To provide management and clinical supervision to members of staff.

To conduct annual appraisals/IPDRs for staff members

To liaise effectively with all members of the multi-disciplinary team and both statutory and non-statutory organisations involved with client care

To assist the Unit Manager in ensuring high quality of evidence-based practice is carried out by all staff within the unit

To participate in the recruitment process, as required.

Assist the Unit Manager in developing a service that will ensure that the needs of 
patients are met with regard to their age, spiritual, cultural, ethnic and sexual 
orientation 
 To assist the Unit Manager with the on-going development of the unit 
 Assist the Unit Manager in developing protocols and procedures that reflect the 
needs of patients within the unit 
 In the absence of the manager, undertake responsibility for the day to day 
running of the unit 
 In consultation with the multi-disciplinary team, ensure high standards of 
individual care for patients and that they are fully consulted and involved in every 
aspect of their care 
 To provide management and clinical supervision to members of staff. 
 To conduct annual appraisals/IPDRs for staff members

 Participate in the monitoring and implementation of the Mental Health Act (1983) 
 To follow the NMC’s ‘The Code: Professional Standards of Practice and 
behaviour for Nurses and Midwives’ 
 To be aware of current research in the care of people with severe mental illness. 
 To assist the Unit Manager in ensuring high quality of evidence-based practice is 
carried out by all staff within the unit
 Assist in the maintenance of up to date records for all service users referred to 
the Unit 
 To participate in the recruitment process, as required.

  • First level registration (RMN)
  • Evidence of Continual Professional Development
  • Practice Assessor
  • IT Literate
  • Experience at Band 5 and evidence of appropriate clinical management experience.
