Senior Clinical Coder

Band 5

Job overview

An exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced Clinical Coder to join the Northern Care Alliance (NCA) Clinical Coding Team.

At NCA, you’ll code across one of the widest specialty ranges of any NHS trust — from obstetrics and neonates to spinal, neurosurgery,  rehab and major trauma. Few organisations nationally can match this breadth, offering a rare opportunity to expand your expertise and work on genuinely varied, complex activity every day.

We are seeking experienced, accredited clinical coders who hold the National Clinical Coding Qualification (ACC) and have proven multi-specialty experience.

As a Senior Clinical Coder (Band 5), you will:

  • Code a diverse casemix, from high-volume day cases to highly specialised activity, ensuring accuracy and timeliness.

  • Work collaboratively across multiple hospital sites within a large, supportive department.

  • Mentor and support less experienced coders, strengthening team capability.

  • Contribute to continuous improvement and service development.

What we offer:

  • Flexibility – hybrid working across Bury, Oldham and Rochdale, or fully remote where appropriate.

  • Breadth – exposure to one of the widest casemixes in the NHS.

  • Career growth – clear pathways and strong internal development support.

  • Community – a collaborative department within one of the largest NHS Foundation Trusts in the country.

If you’re an ambitious, multi-specialty coder passionate about high-quality data, we’d love to hear from you!

Main duties of the job

  • The Coding Team is a skilled team with an excellent reputation that ensures complete and accurate coding of Trust activity. We have an in-house Coded Data and Standards Assurance Audit and Training Team to support in your development.
  • While the candidate will have daily duties and responsibilities, the spectrum of work may be broad across the Department.
  • To provide an efficient and high-quality clinical coding service by ensuring accuracy within the interpretation of descriptions of patient diagnoses and procedural events using the (ICD-10) International Classification of Diseases and the (OPCS) Classification of Interventions and Procedure (OPCS-4) to carry out the coding function.
