Job overview

The successful candidates will be joining our innovative team of 16 Consultant Geriatricians as part of the Ageing and Complex Medicine department at Salford Care Organisation. We welcome less than full time applications and are willing to discuss flexible working arrangements.  Candidates must be able to demonstrate a commitment to Geriatric Medicine.

We are a flexible and innovative department and wish to support candidates to include their chosen subspecialist interest into their job plans.  Recent appointments have been able to include research interests or other CCT specialities (i.e. stroke) into their job plans.

Main duties of the job

The Ageing & Complex Medicine clinical service cover:

  • 3 Acute Ageing & Complex Medicine Wards
  •  Acute Frailty Assessment (EAU, ED) and Frailty SDEC
  • Geriatric medicine outpatient clinics
  • Community clinics
  • Parkinson’s Disease services
  • Intermediate Care Services
  • Orthogeriatric Service
  • General Surgery & Major Trauma Liaison Services

 Direct Clinical Care: 

  • Ward based care
  • Liaison work (general surgery, trauma, orthogeriatrics)
  • Acute Frailty sessions – SDEC, ED in-reach and short stay
  • Out-patients
  • Community sessions - domiciliary clinics, intermediate & urgent care
  • Patient administration
  • Investigative and diagnostic

  •  Audit/Clinical Governance
  • Research
  • Quality improvement
  • Clinical Management

All Consultants will be allocated 1 core SPA per week for professional development, Job Planning, Appraisal, Mandatory Training, attendance at team meetings which will have a clinical governance aspect and audit.  Additional SPA time will be available on the basis of evidenced need. Such allocation will be agreed and subsequently reviewed by the Consultant and their Clinical Director during the Job Plan review.

Person specification

Qualifications / Registration

Essential criteria
  • MB BS or equivalent
  • MRCP and MRCP Geriatric medicine
  • Full registration with the General Medical Council
Desirable criteria
  • CCT in Geriatric Medicine or within 6 months at of appointment

Knowledge, Training & Experience

Essential criteria
  • Orthogeriatric experience within the NHS
  • Must demonstrate a commitment to Geriatric Medicine
  • Ability to communicate and liaise effectively with patients and their relatives and with other members of the multi-disciplinary team.
  • Ability to work and make patient management decisions on own initiative whilst seeking appropriate guidance from colleagues when required.
  • Ability to work as a team with professional colleagues, both medical and other disciplines.
  • Evidence of leadership skills
  • Evidence of teaching experience
Desirable criteria
  • Evidence of Accredited Clinical & Educational Supervision of Medical Learners
