Principal Clinical Psychologist

Band 8b

Our new Northern Care Alliance NHS Group unites five local hospitals to deliver high quality care across the North East of Greater Manchester.

The Alliance provides the benefits of scale but delivers this locally through multiple hospital sites which make up four new Care Organisations – Bury/Rochdale, North Manchester, Oldham and Salford. Using our mantra of ‘Saving lives, Improving lives’, the aim is for our Care Organisations to work closely with the communities they serve to deliver safe, high quality and reliable care, which are trusted, connected and pioneering.

Our Care Organisations are designed to operate within our group arrangement of hospitals, community and healthcare services which bring together over 19,000 staff and the services of The Pennine Acute Hospitals NHS Trust and Salford Royal NHS Foundation Trust. Our size and geographical reach means we are creating an environment each individual will be inspired and empowered by to be the best they can be.  This is a really exciting time to join our new team.

Manchester & Salford Pain Centre

Principal Clinical Psychologist – Manchester & Salford Pain Centre and Musculoskeletal Clinical Assessment and Treatment Service (MSK CATS) / physiotherapy service.

Band 8B

32 hours per week

A part time permanent post has arisen to work across the Manchester & Salford Pain Centre and the MSK CATS / Physiotherapy service.

The Manchester & Salford Pain Centre has a dedicated inter-disciplinary pain management team consisting of 4 other Clinical Psychologists supported by an assistant psychologist and the head of the psychology department, 6 Physiotherapists, 6 Medical Consultants, and 6 Specialist Nurses.  The clinical pathway is designed to facilitate a customised and comprehensive approach to pain management, with the opportunity to design inter-disciplinary therapeutic plans for individuals, leading to group Pain Management Programmes of differing intensity. A cognitive-behavioural orientation is central to the philosophy of all team members.  The postholder will provide highly specialist input into the Pain Centre Pathway and support the further development of the service alongside colleagues.  The ability to work closely with other professions and the application of CBT is an essential requirement.  The centre is keen to promote applied research, teaching and training. Time and money is allocated for the pursuit of CPD.

Service development in recent years has led to the establishment of pain psychology input into MSK CATS and physiotherapy.  Regular combined clinics are run, and a Combined Physiotherapy and Psychology Group Programme is also delivered.  The success of this initiative as well as other ongoing developments in pain psychology has necessitated a reconfiguration of psychology resources, and the requirement for a senior psychologist to lead on provision of psychology input into MSK CATS and physiotherapy.  The postholder will continue the development of psychology input in this area, and particularly will support Psychologically Informed Practice by physiotherapy colleagues and the broadening of this initiative from the successful low back pain pathway into other musculoskeletal conditions.

We are an ambitious service which is unashamed of wanting to ensure that our patients get the very best care and treatment available anywhere. So, if you are an equally ambitious psychologist who likes to be challenged and to challenge others in a kind and mutually respectful way to be the best we can be, you may be the leader and colleague our friendly psychology service is looking for and we hope to hear from you.

In line with the Trust’s Single Equality Scheme we welcome applications from everyone irrespective of ethnic origin, disability, age, gender, gender identity, sexual orientation, disability, nationality, religion, marital status, social back ground or trade union membership. However, as members of ethnicity minority groups and individuals with disabilities are currently under-represented at this level of post, we would encourage applications from members of these groups.  Appointment will be based on merit alone.
