There is a vacancy within Manchester Foundation Trust (MFT) for a highly skilled Adult Safeguarding Practitioner.

Safeguarding is a valued and integral part of multi-disciplinary working across the Trust. MFT has created the opportunity for a full time  Senior Specialist Adult Safeguarding Nurse  to assist the Matron/ Named Nurses within the trust. The post involves opportunities to contribute to wider practice development and initiatives surrounding adult safeguarding.

Safeguarding is integral to Governance arrangements within MFT and we are looking for someone with a commitment to high standards and a belief in delivering reliable and quality service provision in an area of work that is demanding and challenging but rewarding.  The successful candidate will be expected to work collaboratively across the wider MFT footprint, supporting colleagues at all Trust sites by providing expert safeguarding advice, specialist knowledge, education and professional leadership to promote consistent and effective safeguarding practice.

Main duties of the job

Applicants should have experience of working with situations that may present challenges for patients and staff and have an understanding of the national and local issues involved in safeguarding adults. A proven ability to engage in effective multi-disciplinary teamwork is required as is some experience of working with multi-agency partners.

The post holder will work closely with the Adult Named Nurse in working to conform to the mandatory and statutory frameworks to ultimately improve the outcomes for adults at risk across the MFT footprint.

The right candidate will be highly motivated with a passion for ensuring high standards of care across the safeguarding adult agenda, including adults at risk of abuse, Mental Capacity Act, Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards and Domestic Abuse.  They will be able to use their own initiative and have good interpersonal skills in dealing with both internal and external agencies

Recent experience of working directly with adults at risk and in need of protection and support will be evident as will experience in dealing with sensitive and confidential information

Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check

As part of our commitment to safeguarding patients and staff, many roles at Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust (MFT) require a Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check. This is a standard process across the NHS and helps us ensure a safe environment for everyone.

What is a DBS Check?

A DBS check is a background check that reveals any criminal convictions, cautions, reprimands, or warnings. The level of check required depends on the role:

Standard DBS: Checks for spent and unspent convictions, cautions, reprimands, and final warnings.

Enhanced DBS: Includes the above, plus any additional information held by local police that’s considered relevant to the role.

Enhanced with Barred Lists: Includes all of the above, plus checks against the children’s and/or adults’ barred lists.

Who Needs a DBS Check

Most roles involving direct patient contact, working with children or vulnerable adults, or access to sensitive information will require a DBS check. The job advert and recruitment team will let you know if this applies to your role. 

The Costs for a DBS

At Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust (MFT), roles that require a DBS check are subject to a cost recovery policy. This means that the cost of submitting and processing a DBS application if you are successful and join us, will be deducted from your salary within the first three months of employment.   If, however, you withdraw from a conditional offer after the DBS process has begun, you will still be liable for the cost incurred.

Education and Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Current professional NMC/SW England/HCPC registration.
  • Qualified Nurse, Social Worker, physiotherapist or occupational Therapist
  • Over 2 years work experience and knowledge within safeguarding.
  • Evidence of ongoing professional development and training undertaken in respect of safeguarding to minimum Level 3 (as per Intercollegiate Document)
  • Experience of working within healthcare/the NHS
Desirable criteria
  • Line management experience
  • Teaching qualification or demonstrate experience and knowledge in the development and delivery of training to key professionals
  • Qualified Best Interest Assessor

Knowledge and Experience

Essential criteria
  • Specialist knowledge of adult safeguarding practice and legislation
  • Knowledge of local and national policies relating to safeguarding adults at risk, relevant professional and NHS policy initiatives.
  • Experience of implementing and coordinating safeguarding of adults at risk procedures within a multidisciplinary team.
  • Knowledge of legislation and experience of working with the Mental Capacity Act and Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards
  • Experience in a senior clinical position
  • Evidence of team working
  • Evidence of developing/providing education programmes for the multi - disciplinary team
