Job overview

Reporting to the Head of Financial Services and Improvement, the post holder will be responsible for the management of the Financial Accounts and Systems team. They will also be responsible for day-to-day management and maintenance of core financial systems alongside the implementation of new software. The postholder will ensure that the levels and knowledge of expertise are maintained to support the financial integrity of the Trust. The post holder will coordinate and manage the provision of a robust and accurate financial accounting service and adapt to meet new or changing information needs. This post will work collaboratively with the operational teams to provide exemplary monitoring information in respect of the capital programme and be responsible for the administration of Capital Management Group. An experienced and highly motivated finance professional who will look for innovative solutions to deliver the financial accounting and system requirements that support the delivery of the Trust’s financial strategy.

Main duties of the job

  • Provide leadership and management for the Financial Accounts and Systems Team, managing workloads and providing guidance and support with tasks. Actively encourage the Team to identify development opportunities and contribute to adding value to a high-quality Financial Accounts and Systems service.
  • Ensure there is effective financial management information and reporting of the capital programme in line with required timescales, ensuring information is accurate, timely and relevant.
  • Management of the Trust’s VAT affairs, including liaising with the Trust’s external advisor, to ensure Trust processes comply with VAT legislation and maximise recoverable VAT.
  • Manage the preparation and compilation of the Trust’s annual financial statements, ensuring that the statements represent a true and fair view of the Trust’s affairs and support senior management in ensuring that all external reporting deadlines are met.
  • Work with the Trust’s external auditors, ensuring that all requirements of the audit team are met at each stage of the audit process and provide updates as necessary to senior management.
  • Manage the Trust’s financial systems ensuring that these are robust, data integrity is maintained and ensuring that stakeholders receive relevant, accurate and timely financial and business advice and providing expertise in ensuring that financial systems are fit for future.

Essential criteria
  • Able to communicate in a variety of methods: written, verbal and presentational including report writing
  • Communicate on a wide range of complex financial and non-financial issues
  • Communicate with a wide variety of people at all levels both within the organisation and externally
  • Strong analytical skills to make judgements on financial and non-financial problems
  • Expert knowledge of financial information systems and processes to ensure the availability of high quality and accurate information in a constantly changing environment

Qualifications, Specific Experience & Training

Essential criteria
  • Professional Accounting Qualification (member of CCAB body)
  • Evidence of participating in CPD and personal development
  • Have an advanced understanding of financial accounting and capital accounting principles
  • Experience and knowledge of NHS bodies and NHS systems, financial policies and legislation
Desirable criteria
  • Educated to degree level or equivalent
  • Post qualification experience in a financial accounting role
