Job overview

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Wheelchair Therapy Assistant to join our Wirral and West Cheshire Wheelchair Service. 
We are looking for an experienced support worker, who has worked in the hospital and/ or community delivering care and support to people of all ages with a wide range of long term conditions/ disabilities, and is keen to develop their knowledge , skills further in the niche and rewarding area of wheelchairs. 
Ideally you will have experience working as a therapy/ rehab assistant and have knowledge of wheelchairs; however, this is not essential providing you can demonstrate you are quick to learn and have transferable knowledge and skills. You must be compassionate, have good interpersonal and communication skills and be able to work as part of a team.

Main duties of the job

You will be part of a highly motivated multi-disciplinary team providing assessments and wheelchairs to people of all ages with a wide range of conditions that have a permanent disability that requires them to use a wheelchair or associated equipment on a long-term basis.
This is primarily a patient facing role; however, you will be required to carry out a range of housekeeping duties, including the recycling of wheelchair cushions and accessories, and maintaining safe and efficient working environment.
You will see mainly see patients in a clinic setting, but you may need to assess/ review patients in their place of residence. In this respect you must have a valid driving licence for the UK and access to a car for work purposes.
You will work in both locations, Wirral Wheelchair Service, in Birkenhead, and West Cheshire Wheelchair Service, in Ellesmere Port, according to service need, and work the advertised hours.

We deliver NHS wheelchair services to adults and children living in Wirral and West Cheshire for Cheshire Merseyside Integrated Commissioning Board (ICB); and have nearly 8,000 wheelchair users with equipment on issue from our service. We pride ourselves in delivering excellent customer service and on-going clinical support to all our users, along with a comprehensive maintenance and repair service which is provided by an approved contractor.

Qualifications and professional training

Essential criteria
  • Level 3 qualification in health and social care/ equivalent work based qualification/ NVQ Level 3 qualification OR significant equivalent relevant work based experience and achievement of competencies in a therapy/ rehab assistant role
Desirable criteria
  • Evidence of additional training relevant to the role

Experience and knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Experience of working within health/ social care delivering patient care
  • Experience working in the NHS
  • Awareness of roles of members of MDT
  • Experience of using electronic patient admin/ clinical systems
  • Knowledge of safe working procedures
  • Awareness of confidentiality
Desirable criteria
  • Experience of working as therapy/ rehab assistant
  • Experience of working in a wheelchair service
  • Knowledge of wheelchairs and postural management
  • Knowledge of pressure ulcers
