Clinical Fellow

MT04-MT05

Job overview

Previous applicants need not apply

Aintree Hospital, part of the Liverpool University Hospitals group, is pleased to offer a Senior Clinical Fellowship in Cardiology. This is an advanced fellowship designed for doctors who are at, or near completion of, their cardiology specialist training, or who have recently completed their cardiology training and wish to consolidate and expand their subspecialty expertise.

This post is not intended for candidates at an early or intermediate stage of cardiology training. Applicants should have a substantive cardiology background, hold MRCP (UK) or equivalent postgraduate qualification, and be able to demonstrate competence in core cardiology practice with minimal supervision.

The successful candidate will take an active and senior role in the day-to-day management of both inpatient and outpatient services, contributing as a senior member of the multidisciplinary cardiology team. The post is available for a period of 12 months and is designed to support the transition to, or consolidation of, a consultant-level career in cardiology.

To support career development and subspecialty focus, the role includes up to two non-clinical sessions per week dedicated to educational, research, or subspecialty training activities, tailored to the needs and interests of the candidate.

**Please note this vacancy will close once sufficient applications have been received**

Main duties of the job

The post-holder will take a senior clinical role in delivering both inpatient and outpatient cardiology services at Aintree Hospital, operating at the level of a senior registrar or post-Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) clinician.

Clinical responsibilities will include:

Attendance at two to three consultant-led outpatient clinics per week, with expectation of operating with a high degree of clinical autonomy

Active senior participation in daily morning ward rounds and oversight of inpatient management as a senior member of the cardiology registrar team

Participation in the weekend cardiology daytime on-call rota; this may include shift-based working patterns including weekend shifts depending on departmental requirements and mutual agreement

Participation in infective endocarditis multidisciplinary team (MDT) meetings and valve clinic discussions

Provision of clinical leadership and support to junior trainees within the cardiology team

The post includes up to two non-clinical sessions per week, which may be used for:

Subspecialty training in areas such as cardiac imaging (echocardiography, cardiac CT/MRI), heart failure, electrophysiology, or interventional cardiology — subject to departmental availability and aligned to the candidate's career trajectory

Audit, quality improvement, or research activity

Broader professional development, teaching, or preparation for consultant-level practice
