Alder Hey Children’s NHS Foundation Trust is a provider of specialist health care and has a presence in community outreach sites and, in collaboration with other providers, our clinicians help deliver care closer to patients’ homes by holding local clinics at locations from Cumbria to Shropshire, in Wales and the Isle of Man. The Trust also provides inpatient care for children with complex mental health needs at our Sunflower House building newly relocated, and opened on the hospital site.

Clinical Fellow, Cardiac Surgery
Fixed Term - 12 MONTHS (with a view to extend)

The post is an appointment for 12 months initially with a possible further extension as a Clinical Fellow in Congenital Cardiac Surgery at Alder Hey Children’s NHS Foundation Trust and Liverpool Heart and Chest Hospital. Liverpool has been designated by the NHS England to provide Paediatric  Congenital Cardiac Surgery by Alder Hey Children's Hospital and Adult Congenital Cardiac Surgery by the Liverpool Heart and Chest Hospital. 

Main duties of the job

DUTIES
The cardiac surgical fellow will work a hybrid shift system for 48 hours per week on average. At any single time only one registrar/Fellow will be allowed to be on leave. 

The post offers exposure to all aspects of paediatric cardiac surgery, including extra-corporal life support (ECLS), adult congenital cardiac surgery, pectus and chest wall surgery. 

In addition to bedside / theatre teaching, there is a programme of lectures and tutorials on all aspects of paediatric and congenital cardiac surgery. The registrar / fellows are expected to contribute to this programme.

RESEARCH AND AUDIT
The cardiac unit offers facilities for clinical research and is developing an active research programme. The unit undertakes regular audit meetings to which the fellows are expected to participate and contribute. Clinical fellows are encouraged to undertake a research project.

Alder Hey Children's NHS Foundation Trust is one of Europe’s biggest and busiest children’s hospitals providing care for over 200,000 children and young people each year. It is one of only four stand-alone paediatric trusts in UK and is staffed by 2,800 employees.

Alder Hey offers 20 specialist services including being the designated national centre for Craniofacial Surgery and a Centre of Excellence for Paediatric Oncology, Cardiac Surgery, Cardiology, Neurology and Orthopaedics. It is a teaching hospital and trains 550 medical and 400 nursing students each year. A child and adolescent mental health service is also provided with an in-patient unit based at the Trust. Recent expansion has seen the provision of additional theatres (there are 13 operating Theatres in total) and the opening of a new Neuro-sciences development. 

Alder Hey serves not only the children of Liverpool but is the tertiary referral centre for children from Merseyside, Cheshire, parts of Lancashire, Shropshire and North Wales for many sub-specialties of paediatrics. The Trust provides a range of community services including school nursing, home carers and a child development centre. The hospital has over 300 beds, including day beds for surgery, a medical day care unit and Emergency Decision Unit. 

A purpose built Education Centre is situated on the hospital site and is available for all postgraduate educational activity.
