Job overview

This post is for full-time (13.5 PA) substantive Congenital Cardiology Consultant, based at Alder Hey Children’s NHS Foundation Trust but working across site at Liverpool Heart and Chest Hospital (LHCH) with the ACHD and adult interventional teams. This post will provide clinical leadership to a team of Interventional Congenital Cardiology consultants.

The successful applicant joins a team of 10 Consultant Paediatric Cardiologists and 4 Congenital Cardiac Surgeons. The candidate would become part of a 1 in 10 general paediatric cardiology on-call rota and 1 in 4 second on interventional rota.

The successful applicant will join an existing team of consultants who together with colleagues in Manchester to provide tertiary Paediatric Cardiology and ACHD services for the North West, North Wales and Isle of Man CHD network (approx. 8.2 million population). Such services are undertaken both at the Alder Hey Children’s NHS Foundation Trust and Liverpool Heart and Chest Hospital (Level 1 centres) and the Manchester University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (Level 2 centre), with considerable co-operation existing between the Trusts.

At Alder Hey, the post-holder will report through the Clinical Lead for Cardiology to the Chief Executive with professional support from the Clinical Lead. At LHCH, the post holder will jointly report through the Clinical Lead for ACHD and the Cath Lab Director to the Associate Medical Director.

Main duties of the job

The successful applicant will offer expertise in interventional congenital cardiac catheterisation (paediatric and ACHD) and have extensive experience in the care of patients on a cardiac PICU.

The successful appointee will be based in Liverpool working across the Level 1 CHD services for  paediatric (Alder Hey) and ACHD (LHCH). Currently a weekly ACHD interventional list with GA support is provided and any additional programmed activities would be offered on a temporary basis and subject to regular review.

At Alder Hey a ‘Consultant of the Week’ rota is in operation, where one consultant is responsible for all daytime acute referrals and inpatient care during that week (1 in 10 weekday; 1 in 10 weekend). A separate on-call rota is provided for interventional cardiology to cover those consultants not involved in catheterisation (presently 1 in 4 basis). The post holder would be expected to participate in the interventional on-call rota and would therefore be in receipt of the 8% on-call supplement.

Working for our organisation

As one of Europe’s biggest and busiest children’s hospitals, at Alder Hey Children's NHS Foundation Trust, we treat everything from common illnesses to highly complex and specialist conditions. In addition to our main hospital site, we offer paediatric services at a number of community sites and hold local clinics across Merseyside, Cumbria, Shropshire, Wales and the Isle of Man. We also provide specialist inpatient care for children with complex mental health needs in our recently relocated and newly opened state of the art facility.

Alder Hey has a thriving research portfolio and leads research into children’s medicines, infection, inflammation and oncology. We are becoming recognised as one of the world’s leaders in children’s healthcare and research. We contribute to public health, lead cutting-edge research and teach the next generation of children’s specialists. Alongside this is our Innovation Hub, a dedicated space where clinicians and industries can come together to create new products and technologies.

We know that a children’s hospital is different and that our job is more than just treating an illness. To us, every child is an individual. As well as giving them the very best care, we set out to make them feel happy, safe and confident as they play, learn and grow. At Alder Hey we are here to look after a child and their family and that includes mums, dads, brothers and sisters.
