Senior Clinical Fellow - Craniofacial
Senior Clinical Fellow
Alder Hey Children’s NHS Foundation Trust is a provider of specialist health care and has a presence in community outreach sites and, in collaboration with other providers, our clinicians help deliver care closer to patients’ homes by holding local clinics at locations from Cumbria to Shropshire, in Wales and the Isle of Man. The Trust also provides inpatient care for children with complex mental health needs at our Sunflower House building newly relocated, and opened on the hospital site.
We currently have more than 4,000 staff working across our community and hospital sites. We’re also a teaching and training hospital providing education and training to around 540 medical and over 500 nursing and allied health professional students each year.
As black and minority ethnic (BME) employees are currently under-represented in this area, we particularly welcome applications from members of our BME communities. All appointments will be made on merit.
You can expect a warm welcome at Alder Hey Children's NHS Foundation Trust, our staff are friendly and welcoming. We listen to each other and work together to embed our Trusts values and behaviours. At Alder Hey we appreciate our staff and reward them with an outstanding benefits package including:

- Extensive staff health and well-being programmes
Job overview
The Craniofacial Fellow’s post has recognition by specialty advisory committees in Maxillofacial Surgery, Plastic Surgery and Neurosurgery, and is therefore open to Specialist Registrars from these 3 specialties, preferably towards the end of their higher surgical training. The post will be tenable for 1 year, and consist of 8 clinical sessions with 2 academic sessions.
Main duties of the job
The craniofacial department has 2 full day operating lists each week for major transcranial cases and several multidisciplinary clinics. The craniofacial fellow is expected to be involved in these and to manage the inpatient care both preoperatively and postoperatively of the team’s patients. The fellow will also coordinate team multidisciplinary meetings.
In addition, the successful candidate would have access to the non-craniofacial work in their base specialty providing this does not interfere with the clinical and academic work required in the Craniofacial Unit.
For a Neurosurgeon, this would include epilepsy, tumour and spinal surgery and for a Maxillofacial Surgeon cleft lip & palate surgery, and access to the adult maxillofacial surgery service based at Aintree Hospital. For plastic surgery candidates this could include access to general plastic surgery, facial palsy surgery and the vascular anomaly services at Alder Hey. In addition, the successful candidate will be expected to participate in the general trauma and emergency on-call rota of their specialty involving adult patients at Aintree Hospital (Maxillofacial), Whiston (Plastic Surgery) or Alder Hey (Neurosurgery).
