Alder Hey Children’s NHS Foundation Trust is a provider of specialist health care and has a presence in community outreach sites and, in collaboration with other providers, our clinicians help deliver care closer to patients’ homes by holding local clinics at locations from Cumbria to Shropshire, in Wales and the Isle of Man. The Trust also provides inpatient care for children with complex mental health needs at our Sunflower House building newly relocated, and opened on the hospital site.

Job overview

We are pleased to offer this exciting opportunity to an enthusiastic and self motivated professional to join our Aseptic Services team at Alder Hey Children's Hospital.

This is a new role within our team and provides an opportunity to either a registered Pharmacy Technician or Science Manufacturing Technician (SMT Level 3 qualified) looking to take the next step in their career in aseptic services and is willing to develop with the role, to support the preparation of high quality medicines for our children and young people.  

Working alongside our busy team of pharmacy assistants, pharmacy technicians and pharmacists, you will perform day to day production activities within the aseptic unit. You will use your professional knowledge and expertise to support the Production Manager and Senior Technicians in supervising activities to ensure that high standards and compliance with standard operating procedures and GMP are maintained at all times. 

Our service provides a wide range of cytotoxic and CIVAS items to our specialist clinical teams, as well as innovative and novel treatments through a wide range of clinical trials. We also prepare parenteral nutrition (PN) for our neonatal and paediatric patients making this a varied and fulfilling role. 

 

Main duties of the job

To deliver the day to day aseptic services and products and maintenance of the aseptic services facilities and equipment . You will be undertaking and supervising preparation activities within a designated area, carrying out in-process accuracy checks. You will accurately generate documentation for the preparation of products and undertake tasks to maintain operational functions of the aseptic facility such as stock checks and cleaning, according to defined procedures.

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • NVQ Level 3 Pharmacy Services or Level 3 Science Manufacturing Technician or equivalent.
  • Registered with the General Pharmaceutical Council or Science Council
  • Commitment to undertake in-house training
Desirable criteria
  • Leeds Aseptic Preparation and Dispensing of Medicines (APDM)

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Demonstrable knowledge of GMP or QC laboratory practical work experience and/or substantial experience in an industrial /pharmaceutical setting
  • Demonstrable experience of delivering training
  • Demonstrable experience of supervision of team members
Desirable criteria
  • Working with pharmaceutical isolators and using automated pharmaceutical compounders
  • Experience in hospital pharmacy aseptic services
  • Be familiar with handling cytotoxic drugs following approved procedures

Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Good working knowledge of safe aseptic practice & Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP)
  • Demonstrable understanding of good stock management principles

Skills

Essential criteria
  • Good organisational skills and the ability to meet deadlines and work under pressure
  • Ability to follow processes through methodically and meet deadlines
  • Ability to work well within various teams and able to work on own initiative
  • Good problem-solving abilities
