Job overview

This post is for a 12 month locum appointment of a Consultant Cardiologist with a special interest in invasive electrophysiology and Cardiac Devices. 

Main duties of the job

The appointee will be expected to be proficient in the management of all arrhythmia patients, ablation for SVT and AF, and the implantation and follow-up of all Cardiac Device patients.  Sub-speciality interests would be encouraged particularly in the areas of ablation of ventricular tachycardia, as well as inherited cardiac conditions & adult congenital heart disease.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The appointee will be joining a team of 13 EP/device specialist cardiologists. There are 2 specialist arrhythmia nurses and 2 specialist ICC nurses.  This is a locum appointment to meet waiting list demands for the increased numbers of arrhythmia referrals and help achieve national service framework targets.

 

The attached job plan represents a general guide to the job plan for the post.  The precise details of all clinical activities are open to negotiation with the successful candidate, The timetable is fairly flexible and can be adjusted to suit the needs of the appointee and any other specific interests they may have. Likewise, the appointee will be expected to work flexibly to cover clinical sessions where they are available. Device and EP sessions may be performed as dual lists with established consultants.

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • MRCP (UK) or equivalent
  • Entry on Specialist Register (or entry expected within 6 months).
Desirable criteria
  • Postgraduate degree

Clinical Experience

Essential criteria
  • Clinical training and experience equivalent to that required for gaining UK CCT in Cardiology
  • Experience of all aspects of invasive EP and ablation
  • Ability to offer expert clinical opinion on a range of EP and device problems, both emergency and elective.
  • Independent implanter of pacemakers and ICDs, (CRT optional)
  • Independent (1st) operator for EP/ ablation cases for SVT and AF
  • Experience of complex EP cases (structural heart VT, atypical flutter)
  • Proficient in management of all device issues and arrhythmias
  • Ability to take full and independent responsibility for clinical care of patients.
Desirable criteria
  • Subspecialty experience and interests in one of: Ablation of structural heart VT
  • Inherited cardiac conditions with emphasis on channelopathties

Management and Administrative Experience

Essential criteria
  • Ability to contribute to the efficient and smooth running of a specialist service.
  • Ability to organise and manage out-patient priorities and procedure waiting lists
  • Ability to manage and lead a cardiology team.
Desirable criteria
  • Ability to manage and lead a specialist unit, cardiology directorate and working parties as appropriate.
  • Experience of audit management.
