Acute Oncology Clinical Nurse Specialist

Job overview
The post holder will play a key role in the Acute Oncology Team (AOT) & in the delivery of acute oncology services throughout the Trust. The post holder will provide early input of specialist care to oncology patients enabling
- Faster and better care of patients with complications of chemotherapy (early recognition, better treatment, early discharge)
- Faster and better care of patients with complications of cancer (early recognition, better treatment, rapid referral back to specialist oncology team, palliative care team etc)
- Appropriate investigation of patients who might benefit from treatment for unknown primary cancers (targeted investigations, rapid triage of patients into specialist oncology or palliative care).
The post holder will give advice and implement patient care in an area which requires specific clinical knowledge, skills and experience. The post holder will work alongside other clinical colleagues in oncology, palliative care, ED, acute medicine, radiology and pathology to ensure quality of care to the patients is maximised. This will include the development of clinical guidelines & education programmes.
Main duties of the job
Clinical Responsibilities
- Perform comprehensive assessment of patient nursing needs, plan, implement and evaluate care delivery according to changing health care needs.
- Perform advanced clinical skills in assessment &/or diagnosis &/or treatment.
- Collect, collate, evaluate and report information, maintaining accurate patient records.
Involve patients and carers/relatives in the planning and delivery of care and development of services.
- Monitor investigation results, initiating further assessment/review of treatment pathway as required.
- Work collaboratively with other professionals and agencies to ensure patient needs are met, especially in relation to ongoing care needs and discharge arrangements.
- Establish and maintain effective communication with patients and carers/relatives, and professionals across health and social services.
- Contribute to the health promotion agenda with the local health economy.
- To undertake non-medical prescribing duties within the legal framework for nurse prescribing and adhere to the Trust’s Policy for Non-medical Prescribing.
- In keeping with the NMC ‘Code of Professional Conduct’ and ‘Standards of Proficiency for Nurse and Midwife Prescribers’, keep up to date with best prescribing practice in relation to the management of conditions within his/her specialist area.
- Undertake regular audits of his/her prescribing practice.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
Clinical Responsibilities
• Triage and perform specialist assessment of patients nursing needs, plan, implement and evaluate care delivery using advanced clinical knowledge and clinical skills.
• Contribute towards a multi-professional approach in the management of patients within the specialist area, especially in relation to ongoing care needs and discharge arrangements.
• Support patients and their families and ensure that they receive the required information to enable them to self-manage, lead or participate in their care delivery.
• Recognise changes in patient’s condition that require the intervention of others and highlight this as part of the supportive Advisory and Liaison role the AO Team provides.
• Collect, collate, evaluate and report information, maintaining accurate patient records.
• Involve patients and carers/relatives in the planning and delivery of care and development of services.

• Act as a role model and expert nurse providing in depth specialist clinical knowledge to colleagues through MDT meetings, for patients and carers / relatives.
Clinical Governance / Quality
• Identify need for, participate and undertake, research, clinical audit, benchmarking and equipment trials, in order to improve effectiveness of patient care.
• Disseminate research and audit findings through presentation to professional groups and publication.
• Responsible for the development and implementation of policies, procedures and guidelines relevant to own area of work.
• Promote patient and public involvement activities in the specialist area, leading to service improvement.
• Promote people’s equality, diversity and rights.
• Ensure compliance with policies, procedures and clinical guidelines for self and others.
• Disseminate good practice and knowledge by pursuing opportunities to present work at national conferences or via publication, encourage team members likewise.
• Identify clinical issues and incidents within the Trust that reduce the quality of care within the specialist service brining any issues to the attention of the Line manager and appropriate governance structure.
• Take part in activities to counter these to ensure the delivery of safe and effective care.
• Evaluate service delivery against Key Performance Indicators, locally, regionally and nationally within the Acute Oncology Service.
Education and training development
• Identify learning needs, plan, implement and evaluate programmes of education to meet identified need.
• Participate in the education of pre and post registered nurses, medical staff, AHP’s, patient and carers and participate in curriculum development where appropriate.
• Ensure own compliance and compliance of others with regard to mandatory training and NMC regulations and requirements.
