Broadgreen Hospital has an exciting opportunity for a General Service Manager within the Surgery Division to work alongside the Clinical and Nursing colleagues to deliver high quality, patient focused services.

This role is ideal for an operational manager who is looking to develop their career in a rewarding and dynamic environment. The Surgery Care Group includes the Broadgreen Elective Surgical Hub, centralised Pre-op services for LUHFT and Pain Management. Working with colleagues across Broadgreen, Aintree and the Royal sites, this role provides excellent opportunity to build collaborative relationships to improve services.

It’s an exciting time to join the Surgery Division and we have ambitions to become a GIRFT accredited Surgical Hub, and continue to improve our Pain Management and Pre-op Services through digital innovations.  The successful candidate will work within a motivated operational and clinical team, and will be offered opportunities to support continual personal development within their role.

 

 

Main duties of the job

Reporting to the Directorate Manager, the post holder will be an integral member of the Care Group’s Management Team and will be responsible for supporting the delivery of speciality specific performance and improvement plans and will therefore contribute to the Division’s overall strategies and objectives.

The General Service Manager will drive improvements in operational performance and planning within the service advising the Directorate Manager, Clinical Directors and Senior Nurse as necessary.

The post holder will work closely with other Care group leads within the Division, colleagues across other divisions and external partners to enable the achievement of the Trust’s objectives.

Assist with the delivery of the service strategy, taking operational responsibility for delegated programmes of work.

To lead and be accountable for the operational delivery of clinical services

The service manager will lead plans, operational change and strategies within their service and provide and support across the care group.

Support the work to drive the strategic direction and policy setting for the service within the context set by the Care Group leadership team, maintaining an essential communication link between the speciality/specialities and feeding into the Care Group leadership team.

Operationalise robust business and workforce plans within the service, including systems, structures, and processes for managing clinical quality, risk, controls assurance and public involvement initiatives.

Support the achievement of key performance indicators, access targets and contractual obligations including CQUINS and meeting CQC standards for an area identified by the Head of Operations.

Lead for the service in creating an open, accountable culture where teams are confident and skilled in giving 
regular constructive feedback, where issues can be raised and solved openly, resulting in a productive 
solution focused working environment.

Ensure team members contribute to the transformation of patient pathways, ensuring a high quality and 
efficient approach to service delivery. 
 
Embed plans to develop all managerial and administrative staff within the service ensuring a coaching style of 
management and the development of potential at every level is at the heart of everyday communications.

Critically review plans that are in place for the development and review of the clinical service strategy for the 
speciality/specialities, including the monitoring of new opportunities, for delegated speciality/specialities, 
improvements that will enhance patient care, internally and also externally to the organisation.

Develop and implement effective reporting arranegements within the service to accurately record and monitor 
performance against local and national targets and to pro-actively manage any variances.

  • Masters degree level or equivalent
Desirable criteria
  • Management qualification or equivalent

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Recent demonstrable experience of operational management, with clear evidence of responsibility for supporting operational delivery including clinical quality, people management, budget understanding and successful delivery of performance targets within strict financial controls.
  • Experience of being accountable for a clinical service.

Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Understanding and appreciation of diversity
  • Key issues and pace of change facing the NHS nationally and locally, assess and describe impact on services
Desirable criteria
  • Principles and impact of the NHS Constitution
  • Knowledge of governance arrangements and standards in the NHS and the wider health and social care economy
  • Knowledge and understanding of computerised financial, management, budgetary management and workforce information systems
