Job overview

This ENT Laryngology & Airway fellow post is to work within the field of Laryngology and Airway surgery based at the Liverpool University Hospital Foundation Trust (LUHFT) which is the major teaching hospital in the Merseyside & Cheshire region.

 The successful candidate is expected to undertake the duties of a Specialty Trainee in ENT.  Service commitments include out-patient clinics, theatre sessions, daytime on-call duties as well as participating in the on-call rota. At LUHFT we offer tertiary services for laryngology and airway surgery. 

The post is aimed at candidates approaching the end of their higher surgical training, ideally with the FRCS (ORL-HNS) or equivalent, or post CCT.

The year will be characterised by a progressive balance of mentorship and autonomy, aiming to extend the candidate’s surgical and clinical management competency to that of a safe independent practitioner working within a head & neck multi-disciplinary team. 

On call commitments are a 1:9 prospective night cover & a daytime ‘hot-reg’ cover on a 1:9 rolling week rota.  Applicants are required to be fully registered with the General Medical Council.

Main duties of the job

All operating is undertaken in Aintree University Hospital where the head & neck ward and inpatients are based. Complex airway and laryngology operations are performed as expected of a tertiary centre. The department was an early adopter of lasers in head and neck surgery and this is favoured for use in laryngeal and airway pathology. Open laryngotracheal reconstruction is also performed in the department.

There is a procedural local anaesthetic clinic alternate weeks in Aintree University Hospital offering the following services:

-Botox injection to vocal cords 

-Vocal cord medialization

 - Pharyngo-laryngeal biopsies

-Transnasal oesophagoscopy and dilatation

There are close links with respiratory and cardiothoracics in LUHFT and Liverpool heart and chest hospital. The speech and language therapists in the trust offer specialist services in managing patients with: head and neck cancer, dysphagia, professional voice, performance singing voice, inducible laryngeal obstruction and exercise induced laryngeal obstruction.

There is a joint ENT vasculitis clinic where patients are assessed by ENT and nephrology. There is an Upper Airway Clinic where patients are seen by ENT, respiratory, SLT and physio. In this twice monthly MDT clinic patients are seen and assessed for conditions such as inducible laryngeal obstruction.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

This ENT Laryngology & Airway fellow post is to work within the field of Laryngology and Airway surgery based at the Liverpool University Hospital Foundation Trust which is the major teaching hospital in the Merseyside and Cheshire region.   The Liverpool University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust is composed of three geographically distinct hospital sites: The Royal Liverpool University Hospital, Aintree University Hospital and Broadgreen Hospital. 

The post is funded by the Head and Neck Directorate of the Trust.  The successful candidate is expected to undertake the duties of a Specialty Trainee in ENT.  Service commitments include out-patient clinics, theatre sessions, daytime on-call duties as well as participating in the on-call rota. All inpatient activity (elective and non-elective e.g., emergencies) are based at the Aintree University Hospital site, while outpatient activity for this post will be based across both sites.
