Job overview

An permanent full time vacancy arises for a Clinical Scientist to join the Visual Electrophysiology service in  St. Paul's Eye Unit, Liverpool based at the new Royal Liverpool University Hospital which opened in October 2022.   St Paul's is a long established unit with 44 consultant ophthalmologists providing the full range of ophthalmology subspecialties to Cheshire & Merseyside and beyond.  The visual electrophysiology service is lead clinically by Prof Savita Madhusudhan. 

Main duties of the job

The successful applicant will be based at Royal Liverpool University Hospital and will perform a range of electrodiagnostic tests and be involved in the interpretation and reporting of results.   Patients are referred to the service for assessment both from with St Paul's Eye Unit and from other providers.  The service also provides a paediatric service at ALder Hey Children's hospital which the successful applicant will involved in.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The successful applicant will be based at Royal Liverpool University Hospital and will also work at Alder Hey Children's Hospital. They will carry out a range of electro visual physiology tests with adult and paediatric patients, and will prepare appropriate reports to assist medical colleagues in diagnosis and patient management.  Please see job description document for further information.

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • MSc Science degree or equivalent
  • HCPC State registration
  • Advanced ECDL or equivalent experience

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Experience of clinical measurement healthcare science in relevant area
  • Experience of working with patients
  • Experience of communicating complex information in an understandable way
Desirable criteria
  • Experience of research and development in a related area
  • Experience of working independently

Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Knowledge of healthcare sciences
Desirable criteria
  • Advanced knowledge in at least one of the Departments Clinical Measurement specialisms
  • Knowledge of funding application bids
  • Able to follow complex test protocols and identify recording errors and artefacts, and able to decide the most appropriate test to perform.

  • Highly developed physical skills for positioning patients for tests and treatment (particle repositioning manoeuvres).

  • Experience of working with peadiatric patients

  • Sitting in a restricted position whilst undertaking clinical measurement on patients for long periods of time
  • Manoeuvres patients for performing diagnostic tests and treatments
  • Frequent requirement for prolonged concentration when undertaking diagnostic tests and writing detailed clinical reports
  • Occasional exposure to distressed patients whilst undertaking diagnostic tests
  • Frequent exposure to unpleasant conditions (e.g. Vomit, earwax) whilst undertaking diagnostic tests
