Job overview

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a dynamic and enthusiastic band 3 Sleep Assistant Technical Officer (ATO) to join our expanding Liverpool Sleep and Ventilation Service. 

This exciting role will provide the successful candidate with a wonderful opportunity to develop skills with further training in the management of patients with sleep related respiratory conditions by carrying out basic diagnostic tests and assisting in initiating respiratory sleep support treatment.

Primarily based at the Sleep laboratory, Aintree University Hospital you will play an active role in this busy department. You will be given relevant training in setting up patients on diagnostic sleep tests. After a period of relevant training and supervision you will be assisting with management of patients on CPAP therapy and will assist in the follow-up and ongoing review of these patients via face to face and virtual platforms.

As the service develops community diagnostic centres there will be a requirement for staff to rotate around satellite clinics within the Liverpool area.

The successful candidate will be required to work closely with the medical team, our admin team, other clinical physiologists in the department and members of the multi-disciplinary team.

It is essential that you are self-motivated and have good communication skills. You should have clinical experience, preferably within the NHS.

Main duties of the job

The Band 3 postholder will be required to work as part of the multi-disciplinary team towards the diagnosis and treatment of sleep disorders and contribute to and maintain excellent standards of patient care and clinical practice.

The role involves daily face to face interactions (and virtual) with patients to support the wider team to deliver education, instruction and treatment so excellent communication and reporting skills is essential.

There is a requirement to occasionally work nights supervising patients requiring sleep diagnostics such as Polysomnography. 

With appropriate training and instruction, to maintain the stock levels with the current inventory recording system/process, liaising with senior staff with regards to ordering.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

After a period of training, to be able to independently set up and carry out any calibration, testing and system checks necessary in relation to diagnostic and therapeutic equipment in adherence to relevant departmental standard operating procedures (SOP).

To be able to, with training, perform a guided consultation sleep questionnaire process either directly or indirectly with patients (telephone).

To be able to, with training, prepare and programme sleep diagnostic equipment, perform sleep clinics to describe the process of home sleep diagnostic tests and requirements to patients, clean and download sleep study equipment and able to assess quality of diagnostic study.

To be able to, with training, assist the sleep team in the CPAP clinics to include virtual telemonitoring services and face to face appointments for initiation, troubleshooting and follow up appointments including a drop-in clinic, with appropriate reporting of the appointment (such as compliance reports, mask fitting and humidification). This will be across a variety of CPAP brands, models, and modes. This will also include the new PIFU annual CPAP clinic in which require the band 3 post holder to participate in basic clerking of the patient by taking the patients height, weight, blood pressure and providing them with relevant questionnaires. You will also update/provide the patients device consumables as required under the direction of the senior practitioners and physiologists.
