Aintree site has 20 operating theatres across four departments which cover a wide variety of surgical specialties. Liverpool University Foundation Hospital is part of the Major Trauma Centre Collaborative (MTCC), a partnership between Liverpool University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust and The Walton Centre NHS Foundation Trust and is the regional Major Trauma Centre for the North West, providing the full range of services and clinical expertise for patients who are severely injured from all areas of the region.
The departments include:
- Main A theatre consisting of 7 Theatres, Recovery and Surgical Forward Wait
- Main B Theatre consisting of 5 Theatres, Recovery and Surgical Forward Wait

Main duties of the job
The Recovery and Surgical Forward Wait department offers a dynamic, supportive environment with varied workloads, challenges, and development opportunities. Applicants must be flexible to workdays, weekends, bank holidays, and rotate across four recovery areas to meet service needs and gain essential skills.
Ideal candidates will have knowledge of theatre procedures, a professional portfolio demonstrating CPD, and experience in multi-professional working, mentorship, change implementation, and leadership. Key skills include shift coordination, delegation, rota planning, HR awareness, and implementing learning from incidents. Strong communication and motivational abilities are essential, along with resilience under pressure and prioritisation skills.
Applicants should demonstrate leadership, teamwork, HR and change management, clinical governance, and incident management knowledge. Desirable attributes include workforce planning awareness and understanding of NHS policy. Additional requirements: safeguarding knowledge, IT proficiency, ability to manage complex situations, and a flexible, proactive approach to role and shift patterns.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
To lead a Theatre Recovery team in providing perioperative patient care.
CLINICAL
Perform comprehensive assessment of peri-operative patient care needs, plan,
implement and evaluate care delivery according to changing health care needs /
technology and varying levels of complexity.
Collect, evaluate and report information, maintaining accurate patient records to enable
effective care delivery.
Involve the multidisciplinary team and where possible patients and carers/relatives in the
planning and delivery of care.
Work collaboratively with other professionals and departments to ensure patient needs
are met, especially with regard to efficient enhancement of the patient journey within the
speciality.
Establish and maintain effective communication with multi- disciplinary team, patients
and carers/relatives.
Recognise and respond appropriately to urgent and emergency situations,
Treat all information regarding clients and patients as confidential.
MANAGERIAL/LEADERSHIP
Act as an effective role model
Expedite excellent organisational skills and demonstrate leading a team and co-ordinating the recovery area ensuring an optimal level of responsibility and safety.
Deputise for the Theatre Recovery Manager/ Speciality Lead in their absence.
Accept delegated line management responsibilities of other team members including
performance development reviews and provide counselling & support where necessary.
Support the Theatre Recovery Manager to maximise best use of clinical resources, implementing best practice in patient flow, and the patient's journey.
Participate in the recruitment process of the recovery service.
Promotes innovation and the development of services within the speciality area and assist the Theatre Recovery Manager /Speciality Lead to implement change.
Ensure the effective and efficient use of physical and financial resources: reporting
fluctuations and developments in a timely manner.
Monitor health, safety and security of self and others.
Promote best practice in the theatre area.
Clinical Governance / Quality
Assist as required in departmental audit.
Ensure compliance with policies, procedures and clinical guidelines for self and others;
participate in the development of the same.
Continually monitor standards of care and participate in leading the improvement of care,
through benchmarking, audit and research,
Support patient and public involvement activities in the theatre area as appropriate, leading
to service improvement.
Ensure compliance with untoward incident reporting & near misses.
Promote people's equality, diversity and rights.
Assist the Theatre Recovery Manager in the effective use and monitoring the quality of supplies I
equipment.
Education and training development
Participate with the theatre-training department in providing education and development
opportunities for a theatre team.
Develop own clinical knowledge and participate in the development of others. (KSF

Ensure own compliance and compliance of others regarding mandatory training and
professional development requirements.
Assist the Theatre Recovery Manager and Speciality Lead in facilitating an environment that provides staff with a range of education and training development opportunities.
Act as a mentor / assessor to theatre recovery learners

- Post-registration qualification /equivalent in recovery/critical care nursing
