The successful applicant will be based at Aintree University Hospital, one of the Trust’s key sites, and will become an integral member of the Vascular Surgery department. The department is committed to delivering high-quality, patient-centred care, and the postholder will play an active role in the ongoing development of clinical services, education, research, and service improvement initiatives.
Main duties of the job
Applicants must hold Membership or Fellowship of one of the Royal Colleges of Surgeons (UK), or equivalent qualification, and be fully registered with the General Medical Council (GMC), possess a current licence to practice, and be listed on the GMC Specialist Register for Vascular Surgery, or be eligible for inclusion within six months of the interview date.

Working for our organisation
Liverpool University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust comprises Aintree University Hospital, Broadgreen Hospital & Royal Liverpool University Hospital.
We are part of NHS University Hospitals of Liverpool Group, formed on 1 Nov 2024 from the coming together of LUHFT and Liverpool Women’s NHS Foundation Trust. The Group was born from a shared aim to improve the care we provide our patients.
UHLG is one of the largest employers in the region, with over 16,800 colleagues dedicated to caring for our communities - from birth and beyond.
For the 630,000 people across Merseyside, we are their local NHS. We provide general and emergency hospital care, alongside highly specialised regional services for more than two million people in the North West.
Aintree University Hospital is the single receiving site for adult major trauma patients in Cheshire and Merseyside and hosts a number of regional services including an award-winning stroke facility. Broadgreen Hospital is home to elective surgical, diagnostic and treatment services, together with specialist patient rehabilitation. Detailed job description and main responsibilities
The Directorate of Vascular Surgery currently comprises 14 surgeons working flexibly to support the network. Each consultant has an elective job plan which involves sessions at one of our network sites, in addition to sessions at the Aintree site Hub. All consultants participate in complementary C1 and C2 rotas during which they are free of any elective commitments. The unit runs on a 14-week cycle with each consultant being C1 and C2 once during the cycle, such that 12 weeks out of 14 are normal elective weeks. The C1 is responsible for managing the main ward and dealing with acute referrals/transfers. The C2 supports C1 by doing supplementary ward work and also being available to deal with vascular emergencies both at the hub and network sites.
Friday afternoon is set aside as a Directorate session which begins with the forthcoming weekly plan at 1.30 and a review of all inpatients and patients requiring urgent surgery. The rest of the afternoon consists of a rolling programme of audit, teaching, clinical governance, directorate meetings, research presentations and invited guest lectures.
There is a 1 in 14 on call rota covering all our network sites. Wherever possible emergencies are transferred to the Aintree Hospital (which is part of the Mersey Major Trauma Collaborative) but we have committed to attending network sites if required. In addition to covering our network sites we also provide cover for the Liverpool Heart and Chest Hospital (LHCH), Alder Hey (Children’s) Hospital and Liverpool Women’s Hospital. We are also a tertiary referral centre for a wider area including the whole Cheshire and Merseyside region, North Wales and the Isle of Man.
A system of consultant led daily post-take ward rounds is in place.
