Job overview

How would you like to be involved in creating innovative solutions that directly benefit clinical staff and patients within the NHS? In the Informatics Merseyside Development Service, we use a variety of platforms to develop software applications and interfaces, supporting multiple NHS organisations.

The Development Service is looking for a well organised and enthusiastic individual, who is a strong problem solver with experience in one of our three service areas:

  •  Web Development (C#, Asp.net, Entity Framework, Blazor)
  • Microsoft SharePoint (React, Typescript, JavaScript, CSS, C#)
  • Integration of Systems (HL7, XML, JSON, JavaScript, Rhapsody).

Main duties of the job

The post holder will be responsible for the provision of application support to partner organisations and customers and support with the design and development of complex bespoke software applications, including interfaces, databases and other web-enabled and non-web-enabled information systems.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Job Purpose: 

The objective of the Informatics Merseyside Development Service is to develop digital solutions through collaboration and innovation. We are a high performing team, consistently looking to evolve our best practices, knowledge, and skills to provide innovative digital solutions to our partners and customers.  

We are a customer orientated service that is responsive and effective in the delivery of the digital requirements of our Partner Organization’s (POs) and Customers in line with local and national IM&T priorities.  The Development service provision is required to keep pace with ongoing development of technologies, providing solutions that are interactive for the end user and support changes in models of care delivery within the NHS and the need for agile working. The requirements now are increasingly for advanced custom development capabilities, using an array of platforms, languages and technologies.  

The post holder will be responsible for the provision of application support to partner organisations and customers and support with the design and development of complex bespoke software applications, including interfaces, databases and other web-enabled and non-web-enabled information systems. 

Principal Responsibilities: 

  • Assist in the development, testing, implementation and deployment of enterprise-level systems using a range of programming languages and software development tools to ensure they are developed to best practice standards, quality and timescales. 
  • Receive and assess non-routine complex enquiries and requests for service from customers in partner organisations. 
  • Analyse customer requirements and evaluate and propose appropriate technical solutions, where there are a number of options. 
  • Provide training and on-going support to Development Support Analysts in design and development, and in the use of Web, Integration and SharePoint related software development technologies. 
  • Manage a variable workload, planning and modifying, often at short notice, a work programme containing complex tasks and activities to ensure that partner organisation requirements are addressed in an appropriate and timely manner. 
  • Ensure a customer focused approach within project and business as usual (BAU) work and liaise with the clients as appropriate in order to provide feedback on the systems development stage of the projects and respond to related enquiries. 
  • Scan the environment for and assess new technologies and methods to recommend to the Development Service Lead Developer for further investigation. 
  • Maintain existing interfaces, sites and systems and contribute to their continuous improvement regularly reviewing, identifying, communicating, diagnosing and rectifying technical issues. 
  • Develop and sustain effective relationships with suppliers and other teams within and outside the NHS, sharing best practice and knowledge in order to improve the web services offered. 
  • Contribute to a comprehensive technical and user documentation library to ensure that information, knowledge and understanding of systems and solutions can be shared within the team and that end-users are able to make best use of their systems. 
  • Build, test and develop systems to agreed internal and national accessibility standards.

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Educated to degree level in relevant area(s) e.g. Computer Science, Web Development, etc. or equivalent experience in such areas.
Desirable criteria
  • PRINCE2 Agile
  • ITIL Foundation

Knowledge & Experience

Essential criteria
  • Experience of using Microsoft Office 365 applications.
  • Knowledge and experience of a range of Web, SharePoint or Integration software packages or technologies.
  • Experience supporting Trust wide systems (including clinical systems)

  • Knowledge of NHS data definitions, and standards. Ability to interpret NHS policy and provide advice and guidance.
