Job overview
An excellent opportunity has arisen to join the Department of Neuropathology at the Walton Centre. The Walton Centre is a specialist neuroscience trust covering a population of 3.5 million. We are looking for a dynamic neuropathologist to join our current neuropathologists to work in this department. The department has full neuropathology, immuno and EM facilities, and is interested in developing and expanding further. A research tissue bank and CSF biobank exist and are managed by a full time tissue bank manager. The Walton Centre has active neurosurgical and neurological support and cooperation for clinical work and research collaboration. This appointment would be expected to support the clinical workload of the department, and to help develop the service.
Main duties of the job
This includes adult surgical neuropathology (including intraoperative smears and frozen sections); CSF cytology; muscle and nerve biopsy pathology (including enzyme histochemistry, muscle protein immunohistochemistry and electron microscopy); electron microscopic examination of other specimens for diagnosis of neurological disease; post-mortem macroscopic and microscopic brain examination of fixed brains including 'high-risk' examinations.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
The post-holder will be responsible, with colleagues and laboratory staff in the Department, for maintaining high diagnostic standards and for supporting the continuous development of new or improved techniques for the diagnosis and management of neurological diseases. They will be expected to participate in the National Neuropathology EQA Scheme, the registration costs of which will be supported by the Division.
The post-holder will be expected to attend and contribute to clinico-pathological conferences and case discussions and to liaise closely with clinical colleagues to provide a high-quality diagnostic neuropathology service. Current clinical and multidisciplinary team meetings are as follows: adult neuro-oncology – weekly; pituitary MDT – monthly; muscle and nerve pathology – every two weeks.
The post-holder and other consultant colleagues will be expected to provide cover for one another during periods of annual, professional or study leave. The post does not currently include responsibility for out-of-hours clinical cover.

Qualifications & Registration
Essential criteria
- Full and specialist registration (and a licence to practise) with the General Medical Council (GMC) (or eligible for registration within six months of interview)
- Fellowship of the Royal College of Pathologists or evidence of equivalent qualification
- Applicants that are UK trained, must be a holder of a Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT), or be within six months of award of CCT by date of interview.
- Applicants that are non-UK trained, will be required to show evidence of equivalence to the UK CCT
Desirable criteria
- Higher qualification (e.g., MD, PhD)
Training & Experience
Essential criteria
- Recent experience and familiarity of UK hospital systems and practices (or equivalent).
- Postgraduate experience, including full specialist neuropathology training in an approved training post, or equivalent. Part of this period may be in a post of equivalent responsibility and training potential.
- Able to take responsibility for delivering the service without direct supervision
Further Training, Management, Audit

- Evidence (or knowledge if newly qualified) of up-todate participation in CPD.
- Experience in audit.
- Knowledge of evidence-based practice

- Proven track record in research. Demonstrated ability for acquiring external research funds.
