Specialist Nurse (Spinal)

Job overview

  • As a Spinal Associate Specialist Nurse, you will be responsible for the provision of care for patients undergoing spinal surgery on both elective and emergency pathways, enhancing the patient experience from the pre-operative referral period through to out-patient period.
  • Assisting surgeons, utilising decision making and clinical judgement skills, organising and ordering diagnostic tests, undertaking physical examinations, clerking, adhering to policies and protocols and recording comprehensive nursing assessments.

Providing specialist spinal nursing service for patients undergoing spinal and orthopaedic procedures, both inpatient and outpatient and support nursing staff to develop their knowledge and skills within the speciality.

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • First Level Registered Nurse
  • Current NMC registration
  • Diploma
  • Teaching and assessing qualification
  • Clinical examination Level 7
Desirable criteria
  • Post registration qualification in specialist area

Knowledge & Experience

Essential criteria
  • Previous acute spinal/orthopaedic or neuroscience experience
  • Previous pre-op assessment experience
  • Evidence of ongoing/recent post registration development
  • Experience of teaching and assessing in the clinical area
  • Experience in the supervision of junior nursing staff
  • Participation in service development and implementation of change
  • Knowledge of professional and NHS issues, and policy relating to specialist area
  • Able to perform comprehensive patient assessment, plan, implement and evaluate nursing care
Desirable criteria
  • Broad range of clinical experience and experience in specialty or related area

  • Ability to communicate in a variety of settings with patients of varying levels of understanding
  • Able to present written information in a logical manner
