This post is for a Consultant in Adult Urology.

This is a whole-time post offering an exciting opportunity for a highly motivated Medic to join a dynamic, rapidly expanding team delivering multidisciplinary acute care in Mersey & West Lancashire Teaching Hospitals. 

Applicants are required to hold Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons (UK or equivalent qualifications), to be fully registered with the General Medical Council, and to be on the Specialist Register or due to obtain their  Entry on the Specialty register via CCT or CESR (CP) within six months of the date of interview.

Main duties of the job

  • Take on-going responsibility for patients under his/her care.
  • Provide a consultation and advisory service to other clinical colleagues in other specialities within the Trust and Primary Care.
  • Participate in the development of the Urology service, treatment protocols and guidelines and the greater knowledge in the management of urological conditions.
  • In time develop and implement daycase bladder outflow surgery pathways
  • Develop and maintain collaborative relationships with medical colleagues in other specialities and participate in regular clinical meetings and other post graduate activities.
  • Participate in the urology on-call rota with consultant colleagues to ensure that appropriate emergency services are provided out of normal working hours.
  • Make contribution to research and audit and in the development of trainee doctors within the speciality.
  • Develop and maintain good communications with General Practitioners and appropriate external agencies.
  • Demonstrate a firm involvement in clinical governance, risk management and clinical audit – this will include the development and maintenance of appropriate systems and practices to ensure continuous safe clinical practice

We also provide urgent care at our Urgent Treatment Centre located in St Helens town centre.

Specialist Regional Services

We provide the Mersey Regional Burns & Plastic Surgery Unit at Whiston Hospital and the Spinal Injuries Unit at Southport Hospital to more than 4 million people across the whole of Merseyside, West Lancashire, Cheshire, Isle of Man and North Wales.

  • Full GMC registration and on Specialist Register or within six months of receipt of Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) at time of interview
  • Applicants that are UK trained, must ALSO be a holder of a Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT), or be within six months of award of CCT by date of interview. Applicants that are non-UK trained, will be required to provide evidence of equivalence to the UK CCT on successful application
  • MBBS or equivalent medical qualification
  • FRCS UROL. UK, or equivalent
  • Evidence of achievement of competencies by time of appointment in line with GMC standards/Good Medical Practice

Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Evidence structured urology training in endourology and laparoscopy
  • Appropriate knowledge base and ability to apply sound clinical judgement to problems
  • Demonstrates the necessary range, depth, and breadth of competencies in endourology and core urology
  • Sufficient general knowledge and expertise to deal with core urological emergencies
  • Endourological Skills – Including Stones/HoLEP
  • Evidence of appropriate teaching experience
