Job overview

Wirral University Teaching Hospital (WUTH) is excited to be recruiting 1 WTE post in Diabetes and Endocrinology. The post holder will participate in the on/off ward model on our diabetes and endocrinology ward and support the establishment of a fully integrated insulin pump service including transition, young persons, pregnancy, podiatry and adult teams.

Post holder will join an enthusiastic team of 4.6WTE Consultants,  0.8WTE Associate Specialist, and a team of experienced diabetes specialist nurses, dieticians, and multidisciplinary diabetes pregnancy and foot teams. We have a weekly medical disorder in pregnancy clinic and our young person’s diabetes service took part in the Seamless Transition Project. We are the leading provider for Transgender Endocrinology in the region.  

There are opportunities to expand links with the Ophthalmology consultants in thyroid eye clinics and develop any interest in bone endocrinology. We have close links with the Walton Joint Pituitary Team and the Liverpool University Hospitals Endocrine Surgical Teams as well as having our own monthly thyroid/parathyroid MDT with WUTH ENT colleagues and monthly radiology MDT.  WUTH is a digital exemplar using the Cerner PAS with both DKA and VRIII protocols recently upgraded to paperless. 

Whilst not essential, ideal candidates would help develop our research capability as the Trust enters an exciting expansion in research and innovation. We encourage applicants with a range of subspecialty interests. 

Main duties of the job

Duties include - 

  1. To at all times, comply with the GMC’s guidance on ‘Good Medical Practice’ as amended or substituted from time to time.
  2. To ensure that patient confidentiality is maintained at all times.
  3. To undertake duties as defined within the attached job plan in so far as practicable and in agreement with the Clinical Service Lead.
  4. To be responsible and managerially accountable for the reasonable and effective use of Trust resources that you use and influence, and professionally accountable to the Medical Director.
  5. On commencement to ensure personal attendance at the Trust’s corporate Induction.
  6. To participate in the Trust’s Statutory & Mandatory training programme.
  7. To be responsible for the Clinical Management of all patients under your care.
  8. To work flexibly with colleagues to meet the needs of the service and achieve trust and national targets

If successful in this role, there is a requirement for you to have an enhanced DBS.

This will be paid for by the Trust and then deducted from your salary over a period of 3 month.

Qualifications and Training

Essential criteria
  • Hold a medical qualification or qualification registered with the GMC
  • Entry onto the Specialist Register for GMC or be within six months of obtaining CCT/CCST/CESR in diabetes and endocrinology or equivalent
  • Appropriate higher medical qualification such as MRCP
Desirable criteria
  • MD or equivalent higher degree or evidence of relevant research

Clinical Experience

Essential criteria
  • High standard of clinical skill and expertise in the speciality
  • Able to contribute to the full range of skills required for the on call rota for the speciality
Desirable criteria
  • Recent experience in insulin pump clinics

Management & Administrative Experience

Essential criteria
  • Audit/Research
  • Has attended a recognised management training event or will have such training on completion of CCT/CCST
  • Supervision of post graduate trainees
  • Personal time management skills
  • Clinical Governance
  • Ability to organise in patient and out patient waiting lists
Desirable criteria
  • Familiarity within issues of service organisation and development

Teaching Experience

Essential criteria
  • Experience of teaching and supervising undergraduate and postgraduate trainees
  • Ability to teach clinical skills

  • Experience of teaching lay groups and other staff groups

Research Experience
