Job overview

A post has become available for a Locum Consultant Obstetrician and Gynaecologist to augment our enthusiastic, innovative and dedicated team of consultants. This post is advertised initially as a fixed term post with funding from Maternity Safety Scheme. The post is for 12 months initially with a plan to review the current workforce during job planning round in 2026/27. 

The post holder is required to provide care for women with Serious Mental Health illnesses, and work closely with our Mental Health team including Maternal Mental Health Midwives, and wider MDT team including psychologists and regional Specialist Mental Health team.

The post holder will be expected to hold the RCOG ATSM in Advanced Labour Ward Practice (or equivalent) and have experience in caring for women with complex obstetric problems. Due to current workforce changes we require post holder to be able to work flexibly across service to support delivery of high risk antenatal care, which may include diabetes care 

Main duties of the job

To support acute gynaecology and early pregnancy services experience of gynaecology and early pregnancy scanning would be beneficial with the potential to share early pregnancy scan sessions for high risk and complex early pregnancy problems with colleagues.

There would be intention to have a regular gynaecology theatre operating session either supporting the ‘Hot List’ emergency gynae theatre or a separate list with the opportunity to perform intermediate gynae surgical procedures.

The successful candidate will be expected to engage fully with obstetric governance such as MBBRACE, MNSI, UKOSS, ATTAIN – there will be specific allocation of one of these roles as part of Supporting Professional Activities.

 

The unit and hospital are research active, supported by Consultant midwife and research midwives within the WUTH Research and Innovation Team. Current active and recent NIHR studies include: Maternity – PANDA; SNAP3; C-Stitch2, CRAFT, BUMPS. Gynaecology – SIMS LFU; Diamond, Blush, LOCI. For interested applicants there would be opportunity to support and become active within our research programs.

 

It would be expected that the post-holder has a leadership qualification and demonstrates a willingness to progress in a leadership role.

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Full registration with GMC
  • GMC Specialist Register in Obstetrics & Gynaecology or be within 6 months of obtaining CCT/CESR (or equivalent)
  • ATSM in Advanced Labour Ward Practice (or equivalent)
Desirable criteria
  • ATSM Acute gynaecology and Early Pregancy or
  • ATSM in High Risk pregnancy (or equivalent)
  • MD or PhD

Clinical experience

Essential criteria
  • High standard of clinical skill and expertise in the specialty
  • Able to manage acute obstetrics and emergency gynaecology/emergency surgery within an on-call setting at a high level
  • Experience of early pregnancy scanning and management of complex early pregnancy problems
Desirable criteria
  • Experience of leading antenatal care for women with complex medical problems including maternal mental health
  • Able to independently perform basic and intermediate gynaecological operative procedures within an elective operation list - eg hysteroscopy, laparoscopy, surgical management of miscarriage

Management, Leadership and Clinical Governance

Essential criteria
  • Familiarity with service organisation and development
  • Understanding of NHS Clinical Governance, processes and resource constraints
  • Publications in peer reviewed journals
  • Knowledgeable of audit and QI improvement work, with evidence of recent work
Desirable criteria
  • Experience of knowledge of/contribution to National Audit and Assurance processes - eg UKOSS, ATTAIN, PMRT
  • Leadership qualification

Teaching Experience

Essential criteria
  • Ability to teach clinical skills
  • Experience of teaching basic clinical skills to undergraduates/post graduates
Desirable criteria
  • Experience of supervising junior doctors
  • Evidence of teaching MDT team eg PROMPT
