Job overview

Microbiology is looking to recruit an enthusiastic and motivated Support Medical Secretary to join the team.  The postholder will support the office administration and provide an efficient and effective referral service to the Microbiology team.  The postholder acts as the first point of contact for staff and patient queries.  

The role is office based at Arrowe Park Hospital.  The working pattern will be 15 hours per week (9.00am – 5.00pm) worked over 2 days (Tuesday and Friday).  A job share will be considered.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will be responsible for receiving and processing incoming calls and e-Referrals from the Microbiology Advice Line.  You will provide administrative support to the Microbiology Consultants and their team, deputise in the Medical Secretary’s absence, and undertake general office duties.

Qualifications, Specific Experience & Training

Essential criteria
  • AMSPAR Medical Terminology Certificate or equivalent experience
  • RSA Level II word processing or equivalent
  • Experience of audio typing
  • Experience of working in an administrative role.
Desirable criteria
  • Previous administrative experience working with in the NHS or medical environment

Knowledge and Skills

Essential criteria
  • Good IT skills, including use of Microsoft Office
  • Good time management/organisational skills
  • Awareness of Trust guidelines regarding complaints, confidentiality etc
Desirable criteria
  • Awareness of relevant NHS/departmental targets for example 18 week RTT and cancer

Knowledge and Skills

Desirable criteria
  • Ability to use own initiative and prioritise workload using organisational skills
  • Awareness of Trust guidelines regarding patient confidentiality, complaints, etc.
