Job overview

To be part of a team of Chaplains developing and providing a range of spiritual and pastoral services for the Wirral University Teaching Hospital Trust. All Chaplains are required to be able to care for others who may have a different philosophy, belief and value system.

The role includes participating in a 24 hour, on-call rota. This will include working weekends & bank holidays.

Main duties of the job

Work as part of the multi-disciplinary team delivering care to patients, carers, visitors and staff, including being available to be advocates for patients, carers, visitors and staff working in-conjunction with relevant bodies.

Participate in education and training programs as delegated by the Head of Chaplaincy and Spiritual Care.

Qualifications, Specific Experience & Training

Essential criteria
  • Recognised (Ordained/ licensed) and in current good standing with Faith Community
  • Ability to administer religious rituals and rites (inc. communion and baptism) as authorised by faith community in an appropriate way at the bedside and in Sacred Space.
  • Educated to degree level – or equivalent experience
  • Ability to travel for out-of-hours calls
Desirable criteria
  • Previous Chaplaincy experience
  • Counselling course/ advanced communication skills
  • Teaching and mentorship course
  • Computer literate e.g. European Computer Driving Licence

Knowledge and Skills

Essential criteria
  • Chaplains require a commitment to working in an ecumenical/ multi-faith way with openness to the views and doubts of others and a willingness to pastorally care for people of all faiths and no faith. They need to be able to support others who have a different philosophy, belief and value system with integrity
  • Comprehensive knowledge of faith and belief systems to be able to work in a multi-cultural/ multi-faith context
  • Theoretical knowledge on ethical issues relating to health care
  • Ability to teach and share ideas and work as a part of a team
  • Ability to work with those who are bereaved or grieving including work in mortuary
Desirable criteria
  • Knowledge and understanding of workings of the NHS to enable the post holder to work as part of a Chaplaincy Team and play an active part in the life of the Trust in a multi-disciplinary context
  • Knowledge and understanding of national policies and procedures relevant to the provision of a Chaplaincy Service/ Bereavement Care
  • Effective leadership and staff management skills including management of change
