Job overview
The Theatre Department at the Princess of Wales Hospital is seeking a dedicated Theatre Practitioner to join our busy and dynamic team. Applicants must have a solid understanding of the healthcare environment and hold either a first‑level Nursing registration or an Operating Department Practitioner qualification.
We are looking for someone with excellent organisational and communication skills who can work effectively within a multidisciplinary team, adapt to changing demands, and contribute proactively to a high‑quality service.
You will join a supportive and enthusiastic team committed to delivering safe, high‑standard patient care. Princess of Wales Hospital is recognised as CTM’s centre of excellence for orthopaedic arthroplasty, with a main theatre suite comprising six operating theatres, including three dedicated laminar flow theatres.
As part of your rotation, you will gain experience across General Surgery, ENT, Gynaecology, and Orthopaedics, developing the core skills and competencies required to work confidently and safely in each specialty.
Main duties of the job
As a Scrub Practitioner/Circulating Practitioner, you will be required to provide support across the full range of surgical specialties.
The post holder will be expected to:
- Work collaboratively as part of a multidisciplinary team to deliver safe, high‑quality, patient‑focused perioperative care.
- Meet the holistic care needs of patients throughout their perioperative journey.
- Carry out the full range of registered healthcare professional duties, including the assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation of patient care, with support from the practitioner in charge as required.
- Monitor and respond to patients’ needs, including undertaking clinical assessments, recognising and interpreting changes in condition, identifying problems, and taking appropriate action to support patient safety.
- Contribute to setting, maintaining, and auditing quality standards related to clinical practice and patient care.
- Participate in the education, training, and support of other staff members, promoting a positive learning environment.
- Engage in ongoing personal and professional development, including rotation within perioperative areas relevant to your scope of practice to enhance skills and maintain competency.

- Nursing degree / Registered General Nurse or equivalent (Registered Operating Department Practitioner for example)
- Must achieve set competencies within a given time frame
Experience
Essential criteria
- Must be able to demonstrate a knowledge of the surgical environment and type of work to be undertaken
Desirable criteria
- Previous experience in a theatre environment
Welsh language skills
Desirable criteria
- Welsh language skills speaking/listening at Level 3/B2 or above
Flexible to meet the needs of the service
Essential criteria
- Must be flexible to be able to work out of hours including nights and weekends
Desirable criteria
- Student placement in Theatre
Knowledge of risk management
Essential criteria
- Risk management with awareness of how this impacts the role.
Desirable criteria
- BLS/ALS/PALS. Previous involvement in risk assessing.
Knowledge of safeguarding
Essential criteria
- To have an understanding of who's responsibility safeguarding is.
Desirable criteria
- Has been involved with safeguarding.
Patient safety
Essential criteria
- Able to demonstrate awareness of patient safety
