Job overview

We are pleased to offer an exciting opportunity for an experienced Consultant Psychiatrist to join our welcoming Adult Mental Health Team at the Royal Glamorgan Hospital (RGH), a key site within Cwm Taf Morgannwg University Health Board (CTMUHB). This is a pivotal time to join a clinically strong and forward-thinking service committed to excellence in patient care, professional development, and staff wellbeing.

RGH provides a robust inpatient service through four dedicated adult mental health wards:

  • Admissions Ward (14 beds): Intensive assessment and short-term stabilisation
  • Ward 21 & Ward 22 (14 beds each): Ongoing treatment for localities including Merthyr, Cynon, Rhondda, and Taff Ely
  • PICU (6 beds): High-level care with consultant cross-cover

All admissions are managed via the Crisis Resolution Home Treatment Team (CRHT), ensuring appropriate gatekeeping and continuity. Care is delivered by a skilled multidisciplinary team (MDT) including Consultant Psychiatrists, Nurses, Pharmacists, and Allied Health Professionals. Daily reviews and collaborative care planning ensure patients and families are actively involved in treatment decisions.

CTMUHB is currently remodelling inpatient services to enhance care through a direct-to-treatment model, recovery-focused redesign, and strengthened integration with community services. Workforce development and MDT skill mix reviews are also underway.

Main duties of the job

As a Consultant Psychiatrist in Inpatients, you will:

  • Lead on clinical assessment and management of adults with complex mental health needs
  • Collaborate with senior clinicians, ward managers, and nursing staff to ensure high-quality, patient-centred care
  • Supervise junior medical staff and contribute to training across disciplines
  • Engage in service development, audits, and strategic planning
  • Fulfil statutory duties under the Mental Health Act and participate in the consultant on-call rota

You’ll be joining a passionate and supportive team that values kindness, collaboration, and continuous learning. Across our localities—Taff Ely, Merthyr, Cynon, and Bridgend—you’ll find well-established teams led by substantive Consultants and a vibrant peer network. With protected time for education, opportunities in research and leadership, and a strong sense of community, we’re here to help you thrive.

Our team is driven by a shared sense of social justice and commitment to addressing health inequalities across all ages. We value compassion, collaboration, and continuous improvement. Whether you're drawn by the community, the challenge, or the chance to grow, this is a role where you’ll feel supported, inspired, and proud of the impact you make.
