Job overview

 

This post will join the team of Consultants responsible for the provision of urological services to Cwm Taf Morgannwg University Health Board. The Urology Consultants share the responsibility of providing Urology services for the local population in all CTM District General Hospitals and sister hospitals. The Urology Service is undergoing an exciting service model change with the proposed plan of an on-call rota being centralised at the Royal Glamorgan Hospital and using our strengths at other District General Hospitals sites to build a sustainable service. The service is going through a transformation change and it is an exciting time to be part of the service. The Consultant post will be based at the Royal Glamorgan Hospital (RGH) for On call and inpatient care, the post holder will be expected to work at all of CTM sites.  All elective cases in POW are currently daycase only, with no overnight stay and there are no Urology in patients at PoW.  There is a full clinical team based at RGH with training and non training middle grades, a core trainee and Foundation year 1 doctors. An ACP has been appointed to do a daily ward round in PoW which will be supported by consultants doing sessions at PoW and who will be job planned for ward rounds. All emergency paediatric patients are assessed by the paediatric team and escalated to the general surgical team. 

This post is fixed term for up to 3 months to meet the needs of the service.

Main duties of the job

Continuing responsibility for the care of patients under his/her care, allowing proper delegation to, and training of staff, ensuring that concise, agreed management plans are clearly displayed in the notes of patients with complex conditions.  Undertake wards rounds to identify and assess problems and plan management of care and be actively available during the working week so that medical and nursing staff can communicate and consult freely.  Ensure that an appropriate model of care is adopted which recognises the involvement of the multi-disciplinary team, the patient and the family.  Ensure that the use of medical and nursing resources within the department are utilised to their maximum potential.Work with the rest of the consultant team to provide strong professional leadership within the department and be mentored in the delivery of a high quality service provided by well-trained staff within clear departmental policies and procedures.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

o   Provide professional and managerial supervision of junior medical staff

o   Continuing responsibility for the care of patients under his/her care, allowing proper delegation to, and training of staff, ensuring that concise, agreed management plans are clearly displayed in the notes of patients with complex conditions

o   Undertake wards rounds to identify and assess problems and plan management of care and be actively available during the working week so that medical and nursing staff can communicate and consult freely

o   Ensure that an appropriate model of care is adopted which recognises the involvement of the multi-disciplinary team, the patient and the family.

o   Ensure that the use of medical and nursing resources within the department are utilised to their maximum potential.

o   Assist the multi-disciplinary team in the production of referenced, evidence-based guidelines, which are dated, signed and reviewed at least bi-annually or more frequently in light of new evidence.

o   Work with the rest of the consultant team to provide strong professional leadership within the department and be mentored in the delivery of a high quality service provided by well-trained staff within clear departmental policies and procedures.

o   Develop and maintain good communication with clinical colleagues across the Health Board, regarding the treatment of their patients and the appropriate use of the department’s resources.

 

 

o   Required to participate in the Health Board Risk Management process and in Clinical Audit and other clinical governance activities within the department, the directorate and the Health Board.  The post holder will be positively encouraged to participate in continued professional research and development in line with Health Board, Commissioner and NHS priorities.

o   Revalidation will be required to maintain full GMC registration and revalidation should follow the GMC code of Good Medical Practice

o   In liaison with consultant colleagues, have responsibility for the proper functioning of the department in line with the operational policy and strategic plan of the Health Board.

o   Work to ensure that services within the department fulfil contractual performance indicators and work closely with directorate colleagues in identifying problem areas and planning and implementing appropriate solutions.

  • FRCS(Urol) or equivalent /Full GMC registration
  • Interest in General Urology Able to undertake a general urology on call Sees patients within a holistic context Ability to take independent responsibility for the clinical care of patients
