Job overview

Applications are invited for a Senior Clinical Fellow in Respiratory Medicine. The post is available from August 2024 until August 2025. This is an exciting opportunity within respiratory medicine in Wales, and looks to attract trainees keen on developing an interest in Respiratory medicine with opportunity to develop a sub-specialist interest in Respiratory failure and Respiratory High Dependency. The post is based at the Grange University Hospital, Cwmbran, South East Wales. The Grange University Hospital, is a state of the art Critical Care Centre opened in November 2020. We have a developing 8 bedded Respiratory HDU. We have over 250 acute NIV admissions per annum covering Aneurin Bevan University Health Board and have an expanding domiciliary service with currently over 150 patients.

The successful applicant will be expected to take part in local and national audits as well as research projects. We are an active department and local and national presentations are supported, in addition to having national links with previous collaboration in multicentre trials.

You will be expected to provide prospective cover for colleagues, with participation in the acute general medicine on call rota.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will work directly with a Consultant Respiratory Physician at the Grange University Hospital in assessing and treating patients with acute respiratory failure within the Respiratory High Care Unit. Although this is not an approved training post, the applicant will receive the same training and experience in line with existing training at CMT/ST level in Respiratory medicine dependent on the experience of the applicant. The posts would ideally suit someone who has some experience in Respiratory Medicine and wishes to look at developing a sub specialist interest in respiratory failure. However, it is not essential and the work commitments of the team will be reviewed and adjusted to that of a more junior or more senior level but both of the potential job timetables provide excellent experience in Respiratory Failure/NIV.

The successful applicant will have the opportunity to develop advanced skills in NIV to support the NIV inpatient unit (8 bedded high care unit within the respiratory floor). In addition they will be involved in A&E and Medical Assessment Unit cover for suspected and confirmed NIV/Respiratory Failure patients as well as new inpatient referrals, and become an integral member of the NIV Retrieval service. The successful applicant will review new NIV admissions to the Unit and be actively involved in NIV assessment and management of care.
