Job overview
This is an exciting opportunity for a highly motivated and experienced Pharmacist to join the Aneurin Bevan University Health Board (ABUHB) Pharmacy team within Medicine. The post holder will be based at the Royal Gwent Hospital in Newport, and will be responsible for leading the provision of medicines and medicine optimisation to medical specialities bases on experience/interests (including admission, endocrinology, care of the elderly, acute medicine, etc). The successful candidate will work in close partnership with the Divisional Pharmacist for Medicine to lead the pharmacy service and will be assigned a directorate to support upon appointment.
The successful candidate will possess influencing and negotiating skills, as well as being an excellent communicator and will work as part of a cluster team of pharmacists and pharmacy technicians. As a clinical leader in your speciality, you will support the pharmacy senior management team in areas such as clinical audit, implementation of medicines optimisation strategies, and service improvements aimed at enhancing the benefits that the pharmacy team bring to our medical patients.
This post is fixed term/secondment for 24 months to 31/03/2028 to meet the needs of the service. If you are interested in applying for the secondment position, you must obtain permission from your current line manager prior to applying for this post.
Main duties of the job
Key areas of responsibility will include:
- The planning and delivery of the pharmacy service to medicine at RGH.
- Management of condition specific therapy, including high-cost medicines within assigned directorate area within medicine.
- Education and training of Pharmacist trainees, junior Pharmacists and multidisciplinary colleagues
- Working to ensure adequate medicines safety, and financial governance associated with medicines use.
- Working collaboratively with pharmacy colleagues across all sites to maintain continuity of care for patients and to unify working practices.
- Formulating medicine policies and guidelines that promote rational and economical prescribing in conjunction with medical staff.
- Attending and contributing to Directorate/Speciality meetings.
- Reporting of clinical incidents and responding to medication errors by helping review practice and decrease risks.
This role will be challenging but immensely rewarding. This is an excellent opportunity to further develop your engagement and networking skills, as well as hone your clinical pharmacy skills within medicine.

This post may be offered under Annex 21 of the NHS Terms and Conditions of Service. Annex 21 applies where a candidate does not yet meet the full requirements of the role but can be appointed as a trainee and offered a structured training programme to allow development to the required standard. During the training period, salary will be paid as a percentage of the fully qualified rate in accordance with Annex 21 provisions. Upon successful completion of training and attainment of required competencies, the post holder will move to the appropriate spine point of the full pay band for the role.
