Job overview
We have an exciting opportunity for a Dental Nurse to join our team in our Orthodontics/ Maxillofacial and Oral Surgery Department which is based at the Royal Gwent Hospital, Newport and Nevill Hall Hospital, Abergavenny.
You will be required to assist in the delivery of appropriate healthcare within the Maxillofacial Theatre and oral surgery and orthodontic clinical areas.
You will act independently within clearly defined occupational policies and procedures, referring to the Manager when required.
Main duties of the job
To assist in developing an environment which supports the value of care for patients in theatre and clinic settings, ensuring an effective and efficient service is provided.
To be committed to ensuring quality of care is delivered whilst assisting the surgeon in general anaesthetic theatre.
To liaise and communicate with members of the multi disciplinary team in the assisting, planning and delivery of patient care.
To be responsible for booking of clinics and appointments.
To be aware of and demonstrate practice based on current advances in dental nursing.
To participate in monitoring of theatre and clinic standards.
To remove facial sutures without supervision on the direction of the clinician/Registered General Nurse.

Qualifications
Essential criteria
- Registration with the General Dental Council
- National Certificate and/or Hospital Certificate for Dental Nursing
- Knowledge of a range of dental procedures; acquired through NVQ Level 3 or equivalent training plus experience to diploma level or equivalent
- Understanding the diverse patient needs
- Awareness of Health & Safety at work
Desirable criteria
- Experience of special needs patients
- Understanding of ordering systems
- Ability to assist with Orthodontic/Oral surgery procedures
- Ability to assist with all prosthetic and conservation treatments.
Experience
Essential criteria
- Evidence based record of delivering high quality care
Desirable criteria
- Hospital / orthodontic/ oral surgery experience. Although previous experience of the speciality would be an advantage, the department offers a comprehensive induction programme for newly qualified dental nurses
