Job overview

Applications are invited to apply for Consultant in Intensive Care at the James Paget University Hospital. This modern District General Hospital has approx. 500 beds and is situated in a coastal holiday area of East Anglia. It serves a population of 250,000 that increases considerably in the summer months.

Main duties of the job

The Intensive Care Unit is situated in the centre of the hospital opposite to the theatre suite adjacent to the Anaesthetic Department. We are a combined 12 bedded ICU/ HDU, We have facilities and equipment to provide a full range of ICU services. 

 

We enjoy Metavision, a fully computerized data collection system enabling us to be a paper free unit.  The clinical information system facilitates patient care, management audit and electronic prescribing

 

Our Critical Care Unit is a mixed medical and surgical ICU. We admit approximately 650 patients per year. All admissions are on a Consultant to Consultant referral basis. The current capacity is 4 Level 2 and 4 level 2 beds. We have an active multidisciplinary team involved in critical care, which meets daily on the ICU Ward Round.

 

There are eight full time consultants with a specific interest in ICU that participate in dedicated hot weeks which provide excellent continuity of care and service according to the national service specification for ICM. At trainee level we have a dedicated 1/7 ICU rota to accommodate trainees in Anaesthesia, ICM, and Respiratory medicine for which we are able to provide Stage 1 ICM training.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

 

1.     To be a well-rounded, experienced and dynamic individual dedicated to providing excellent care within the Intensive care services at the JPUH.  To provide a consultation and advisory service to medical colleagues in other specialities in the Trust.

 

 

2.     To promote excellence in clinical care via ongoing personal development in areas of interest such as teaching, clinical pathways, and service integration. The successful candidate will have opportunity within scope of the job plan to develop interests in a related clinical specialty such as Respiratory or acute medicine.

 

3.     To participate in and help develop further our robust clinical governance processes within the Trust. To participate in the departmental Quality Improvement programmes under the direction of the Clinical Lead.

 

4.     To promote and participate in our commitment to the UEA medical school as part of a department working within a university hospital.

 

5.     Comply with the outline Consultant work programme (under provisions of Circular HC90/16) and the weekly timetable of fixed commitments (i.e.: regular scheduled NHS activities in accordance with paragraph 30B of the TCS). 

 

6.     Deploy unallocated, flexible professional time on liaison, emergency work, travel, continuing clinical responsibility, teaching, research, medical audit, inter-disciplinary meetings and continuing professional development.

Education and Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • MB ChB, MBBS or equivalent Primary Medical Qualification
  • Registration with the GMC, with a full licence to practise OR eligible for registration within six months of interview.
  • Eligible to be included on the GMC Specialist Register with a Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) or equivalent Certificate of Eligibility for Specialist Registration (CESR) in ICM or complementary specialty to ICM • OR be within six months of achieving CCT in ICM/ or a complementary specialty to ICM at the time of interview
Desirable criteria
  • FFICM or EDIC
  • Extended complementary skills e.g. Echo, USS accreditation

Special knowledge/ Abilities/ Experience

Essential criteria
  • Evidence of equivalent levels of experience (e.g. Consultants predating the CCT programme) OR Clinical training/experience equivalent to ICBTICM Intermediate/Stage1 ICM training Extensive relevant experience for the post
  • Willingness to promote organ donation as an essential and routine element of end of life care in accordance with NICE guidelines
  • Willingness to routinely cooperate closely with the Specialist Nurses for Organ Donation
Desirable criteria
  • Experience in work force training and development
  • CCT in related acute clinical specialty eg Acute/ Respiratory Medicine
  • Experience as ICU Consultant in the UK

Audit and Research

Essential criteria
  • An understanding of the principles of research
  • Knowledge of using evidence base medicine to support decision making
  • Evidence of participation in clinical audit and Quality Improvement
  • Commitment to continuing professional development and medical education
Desirable criteria
  • Published research. Relevant Critical Care presentations/publications.
