Main duties of the job
The post holder will lead the delivery of specialist orthodontic care for children and adults, managing a wide range of complex cases including multidisciplinary and orthognathic treatments. They will provide high‑quality clinical care, contribute to the development of the orthodontic service, and work closely with colleagues in Oral Surgery, Maxillofacial Surgery, Paediatrics, and regional partners. You will play an active role in clinical governance, audit, and service improvement, while supporting the training and supervision of junior dental staff.
Key responsibilities include:
Clinical Care
- Deliver safe, effective orthodontic treatment for children and adults, including complex secondary‑care cases.
- Participate in combined orthodontic–orthognathic pathways in collaboration with NNUH.
Governance and Quality
- Contribute to clinical governance, audit and continuous improvement within the service.
Teaching and Supervision
- Support and supervise junior dental staff, including DCTs, and contribute to teaching activities.
- Maintain continuing professional development and engagement with CME.
Service and Leadership
- Help ensure the smooth running and development of the orthodontic service, including participation in departmental meetings and annual job planning.
Professional Standards
- Comply with Trust policies relating to safeguarding, health and safety, infection control, data protection and equality.
This role includes a balance of Direct Clinical Care and Supporting Professional Activities, supporting both high‑quality patient care and ongoing service development.

Qualifications
Essential criteria
- BDS or equivalent
- Full registration with the UK General Dental Council
- Full registration on GDC Specialist Register in Orthodontics
- Programme in Orthodontics obtaining CCST or equivalent
Desirable criteria
- Further postgraduate qualifications (e.g. MSc, DDS or equivalent)
Professional Values & Behaviours, Skills and Knowledge
Essential criteria
- Evidence of SAC approved specialist training in orthodontic to consultant level or equivalent
- Wide experience in treatment of complex orthodontic cases appropriate to Secondary care
- Meets the criteria set out in the Specialist generic capabilities framework
