Job overview

We have an new and exciting, permanent, 3 day (22.5hour) opportunity for someone to join the Norfolk & Suffolk Environmental Controls multi-disciplinary team based at the Colman Centre, Norwich, as a Band 5 Clinical Technician. We are looking for a passionate, caring and innovative Clinical Technician to join our friendly and dynamic team. The post holder will help support our patients with profound physical disabilities to use electronic assistive technology, enabling them to live with a degree of independence in their homes. You will be joining a specialist, knowledgeable and supportive team striving to meet our patients needs in the Norfolk and Suffolk areas.

Main duties of the job

This post will be part of the Norfolk and Suffolk Environmental Controls clinical team. The post holder will give technical expertise and support to the team which provides electronic assistive technology equipment to children and adults with complex physical disabilities. They will be required to provide installation, configuration, repair and maintenance to a wide range of specialist devices and accessories, often within the patients’ homes. 

 

 Main duties of the job

  • To provide technical support, training and guidance to patient’s and professionals as required.
  • To install, maintain and repair specialist Environmental Controls equipment appropriately to meet patient’s need.
  • To be responsible for management of the Norfolk and Suffolk Environmental Controls equipment.
  • To understand the technical aspects of how environmental controls can interface with computers, wheelchairs and Alternative and Augmentative Communication systems, nurse call systems, etc. and to work with other agencies to enable interfacing when required.
  • To work autonomously as the only Environmental Controls Clinical Technician for the team and within the Trust.
  • To keep abreast of clinical and technical developments in environmental controls, including commercially available technology.

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • GCSE Maths and English or equivalent.
  • HND in Electronics or Engineering or similar qualification with knowledge, gained during working in the field.
Desirable criteria
  • Evidence of regular participation in formal and informal technical training throughout career.

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Installing, maintaining, repairing a variety of electrical/mechanical equipment.
  • Experience of providing face to face, customer or patient service.
Desirable criteria
  • Experience working within health or social care offering support to patients/clients.
  • Experience of working with patients with complex disabilities.
  • Experience of working with assistive technology.

Skills

Essential criteria
  • Ability to install, repair and maintain electrical and electronic and computer-based systems. Competent in using a variety of computer operating systems.
  • Ability to write comprehensive current records and to input data accurately and in a timely way.
  • Knowledge and understanding of the risks to patients and staff arising from the use of a range of equipment.
  • Mechanical engineering skills including the use of test and measuring equipment, assembly and bonding of components, use of technical manuals and drawings.
  • Ability to use computers to use Word, Excel and PowerPoint and to input and extract data from the Trust I.T. systems.
Desirable criteria
  • Ability to adapt or create Environmental Control Systems using a modular approach, ensuring that components are safe, compatible, and offer a bespoke solution to the patient.
  • Knowledge of relevant legislation, technical and quality national standards, national and professional guidance. Knowledge of test procedures used to verify the performance and safety of a range of clinical equipment. This will include being able to analyse basic measurement results in order to identify operational or safety deficiencies.

  • Ability to move and handle equipment and work in confined spaces/ the post holder will need to be passed fit to perform full duties of the post through occupational health with any reasonable aids and adaptations if necessary.
  • Ability to use fine tools to adjust and fit equipment, components and switches.
  • Concentration is required when undertaking assessments and writing reports.
  • Must hold full and valid driving licence and have access to a vehicle.
  • Able to communicate effectively in written and verbal English Language.
