We are enhancing our urgent and emergency care specialist services for patients with significant injuries as a result of trauma and have an ambition to become a Major Trauma Centre.

An exciting opportunity has arisen within the Substance Misuse Team at NNUH to recruit an Advanced Nurse Practitioner (ANP) who will also be part of the wider Complex Health Hub.

We're looking for a confident ANP with experience of managing complex care and making decisions autonomously, based on sound evidence-based principles. The ideal candidate will have experience in supporting vulnerable people and working collaboratively with a range of health care professionals and teams in both the hospital and community to provide coordinated and integrated care ensuring the best outcomes for our patients. 

Under the supervision of the Senior ANP, the postholder will act as a lead expert for drug and alcohol assessments and treatments within the hospital. You will be supporting patients in their recovery including Opiate Substitution Treatment and Alcohol detoxification along with promotion of healthy lifestyles.

This post is expected to provide clinical services working within ANP competencies and supported by the multidisciplinary team and senior medical staff. 

Patient Assessment & Care:

Conduct comprehensive clinical assessments of patients presenting with acute illness or injury who are also experiencing difficulties from drugs and alcohol usage.

Clinically examine and assess patient needs from a physiological and psychological perspective, and plan
clinical care accordingly

Deliver appropriate treatment, management plans, and clinical interventions within your scope of practice.

Prioritise patient needs based on clinical urgency and safety.

Prescribe and review medication for therapeutic effectiveness, appropriate to the patient’s needs and in accordance with evidence-based practice, national guidelines, and within scope of practice.

Use clinical information to adjust care and treatment including medications or provide onward referral to appropriate health professionals.

Have an understanding and commitment to recovery and a person-centered trauma informed approach.

  • The post holder will be expected to exercise a high degree of personal professional autonomy and make critical judgements to satisfy the expectations and demands of the role and service.
  • Assimilate highly complex strands of information autonomously, to reach a differential diagnosis, order appropriate investigations and begin first line treatments in line with local and national guidelines. 
  • Demonstrate comprehensive, efficient, timely and targeted clinical history taking. Able to liaise with community and Mental Health services to provide holistic assessment of these patients. 
  • 4.    Demonstrate ability to perform a mental health assessment. Takes a focussed mental health and substance misuse history.
  • Working autonomously, as a clinical expert: assess, plan, implement and evaluate specialist nursing provision. 
  • Develop and implement specialist nursing protocols. 
  • Develop and maintain nurse led initiatives including clinics.
  • Communicate sensitive condition related information to patients and relatives. Provide ongoing support and reassurance.
  • Assessment of incoming referrals. Undertake clinical, psychological and social    assessment of patients. Interpret results, liaising with multi-professional colleagues where indicated. Maintain accurate documentation.
  • Lead on the setting, implementation and monitoring of evidence based practice within the service.
