Job overview

NSFT secure services provides mental health services for adults from 18 years and above. We provides admission, assessment and treatment within a secure environment for individuals with severe mental health problems who require a supervised and supported approach to their treatment.  Northside House provides a high level of rehabilitation activities to address the individual needs and to support progression along service user treatment pathways.  Achievement of rehabilitation goals will allow the patient to function in conditions of lesser security, maximize their independence and autonomy to attain a sense of personal fulfilment, whilst maintaining adequate support for patient and public safety. 

It's an exciting time within Secure and Forensic Services, with a focus on quality improvements for our service users as well as wider organisational changes.  

Main duties of the job

Management

Responsible for the line management of identified members of the service. 
Monitor the practice of junior staff and identify any learning and development needs in respect of the clinical skills base. 
Maintain own and lead/supervise staff in maintaining professional, therapeutic relationship/boundaries with patients, carers and colleagues. 
Provide and ensure provision of regular line management supervision and Appraisals to junior members of staff. 
Complete ward rotas as required, ensuring ward is sufficiently and safely staffed at all times. 

Clinical

To be accountable for own professional practice. 
Support the development and implementation of recovery focused interventions to patients with mental illness. 
Provide training and support to other as appropriate, including non-statutory agencies. 
Demonstrate effective personal planning and organisation of personal daily work load and that of others. 
Work flexibly, managing own working time effectively according to service demands. 
Make clinical judgements, identifying alternative courses of action, managing and providing a high quality of care and supporting others to do the same.

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Registration with the NMC
  • Registered Mental Health Nurse
  • Completion of the preceptorship
  • Signed off as a mentor/supervisor

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Relevant post registration experience in a mental health setting
Desirable criteria
  • Management / Leadership of junior staff.

Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Understanding of issues surrounding confidentiality
Desirable criteria
  • Awareness of security and its impact and willingness to expand knowledge on it
  • Working knowledge / application of the Mental Health Act 1983

Other

Essential criteria
  • The ability to undertake Breakaway and Physical Intervention training
