Job overview

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a full-time Band 6 Speech and Language Therapist, Occupational Therapist or Learning Disability Nurse to join the Starfish Plus Learning Disability CAMHS team. Experienced Band 5 clinicians who are considering stepping up into a Band 6 role within Starfish Plus are also welcome to apply for the position. Clinicians with a real interest in working with children and young people with a diagnosed learning disability and mental health difficulties are welcomed to apply for the post to join our friendly and supportive team. 

Applicants for the role will need to have experience of working with people with learning disabilities in a community health setting as the role includes seeing children and young people different settings including their home and education settings. Experience in supporting people with mental health needs is beneficial. We hope that those applying for this post are committed to reducing the impact of learning difficulties and mental health needs on the child/young person's peer and family relationships. 

We work country-wide in Norfolk so it is essential that applicants are able to drive and have access to be a vehicle.  Please note this is a fixed term post for 12 months.

Main duties of the job

  • To provide high quality support, assessment and advice to children and young people with significant learning disabilities and their families, under the support of Senior Clinicians in the team.
  • To provide a range of clinical expertise and design ongoing assessment and interventions under the direction of the Senior Clinicians in the team to meet the child’s changing developmental needs.
  • To work as part of a multi-disciplinary Team to ensure multi-professional patient care for children and young people.
  • To be committed to reducing the impact of learning disabilities and mental health on the child/ young person’s peer and family relationships.
  • Mentoring new colleagues and students in the assessment and intervention support of children and young people open to the service.
  • Safeguarding and other relevant associated skills on review and agreement at PDR.

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Degree in relevant discipline
  • Registered with HCPC or RNLD/RMHN
  • Additional specialist knowledge and expertise (equivalent to diploma level)
Desirable criteria
  • Additional training relevant to supporting people with a learning disability
  • Membership of relevant Clinical Excellence Networks

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Relevant post registration experience.
  • Experience of working with children/young people who have learning disabilities and their families.
  • Experience of collaborative multi-disciplinary and multi-agency working.
Desirable criteria
  • Experience of working in the community.
  • Experience of working with children/young people who have mental health diagnoses.
  • Experience of different approaches used to support people with a learning disability.
  • Supervision of students and junior staff.

Skills, Abilities and Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Knowledge of the emotional, psychological, developmental and social needs of children and young people with learning disabilities.
  • Ability to apply evidence-based clinical interventions.
  • Understanding of non-verbal communication systems and their use with children and young people.
  • Accurate, timely and concise record keeping
  • Understanding the concepts of behaviour that ‘challenges’ and impact on a child/young person’s relationships
  • Extensive knowledge of the emotional, psychological, developmental and social needs of children and young people with learning disabilities.
  • Sensitivity to and understanding of the individual needs of children and their families.
Desirable criteria
  • Participation in group work
  • Carrying out individualised work
  • Knowledge of local statutory and non- statutory resources available for this group
  • Knowledge of current legislation and policy in Learning Disabilities / Mental Health

Communication

Essential criteria
  • Able to communicate on all levels with children/young people/parents/carers and other professionals.
  • Good written and verbal communication skills.
  • Good presentation skills
  • Able to work as part of a multi-disciplinary team
  • Able to speak and understand English Language
Desirable criteria
  • Good working knowledge of communication tools such as Sign-a-long, Objects of Reference, visual schedules etc
  • Good working knowledge of approaches such as Theraplay, Intensive Interaction etc.

  • Able to supervise students / non-registered colleagues.
  • Able to deliver training with other colleagues.
  • Able to work autonomously and set own priorities.
