We are looking for a registered nurse to join our growing critical care team as we are increasing our current bed base within Intensive care to meet the needs of the local community.

Delivering high quality care to  both level 2 and 3 patients in line with Guidelines for the provision of Intensive Care Services throughout the patients acute phase and rehabilitation phase.  Excellent communications skills are required to communicate with healthcare professionals, patients and their loved ones. Key clinical skills and good time management are essential for the role. The post holder is required to completed national critical care steps competencies supported by clinical education team.

Clinical Responsibilities: 

Maintain a professional behaviour at all times and promote a positive image of Harrogate and District NHS Foundation Trust demonstrating our trust values

Practice within the NMC Code of Professional Conduct

To ensure care is delivered in accordance with latest evidence based practice guidelines

To ensure that patients and next of kin are informed as appropriate and as consented to by the patient themselves

To maintain up to date and comprehensive records of care in accordance with NMC and legal requirements

Maintain patient confidentiality at all times

To be responsible for the unsupervised assessment of patient care needs and the development, implementation and evaluation of plans of care, ensuring high standards of evidence based care

To undertake all nursing procedures in accordance with Trust policies and ensure that these procedures and policies are understood and adhered to by all staff, within own management responsibility

Prepare bed areas for admission of critically ill patients ensuring all equipment is available, correctly assembled and functional

Assess, plan, implement and evaluate patient care using evidence to rationalise care for both conscious and unconscious patients independently

Process diagnostic tests and obtain samples as requested by medical staff e.g. blood taking. Report results when available to appropriate staff

To be clinically competent in using all equipment available on the critical care area and be able to train others in its use e.g. ventilatory support; invasive pressure monitoring; intravenous infusion devices; near patient testing; dynamic mattress systems

Constantly observe patient’s haemodynamic and ventilatory status, accurately record observations and take appropriate actions, relaying abnormalities to colleagues within the MDT

Safely care for patients with multiple infusion devices, maintaining accurate fluid balance.

Assess patient’s level of consciousness, utilising appropriate tools. Report changes as appropriate. Safely care for aggressive and/or confused patients, maintaining a safe environment at all times for patients, staff and visitors

Participates in clinical procedures are required to prepare all equipment and safely care for the patient during and after the procedure independently (procedures dependent upon individuals area of practice).

Safely manage patient’s requiring continuous veno-venous hemodiafiltration.

Respond appropriately in emergency situations to support the multidisciplinary team in a cardiac arrest situation

Sensitively care for dying patients and their families, provide information and support. To be involved in organ donation processes as appropriate

Safely prepare patients for discharge. Communicate verbally and in writing relevant information to receiving wards, specialist clinical teams, patients and carers, and other disciplines e.g. Social Work Department

In times of need the post holder will be expected to support on both medical and surgical wards

Education:

To assist in the teaching and practice development of junior colleagues and students

To demonstrate the use of information and research findings to support and promote evidence based practice within the clinical area

To participate in research and audit within Critical Care.

 

Leadership and Management:

Demonstrate effective time and resource management

To monitor and record planned vs actual staffing levels and escalate issues when necessary

Demonstrate the use of effective communication

Have an awareness of cost implications and assist in the management of resources within the clinical area 

Contribute to quality & service improvement projects
