Occupational Therapy Assistant Practitioner

Job overview
The post holder will undertake highly skilled support work with children and young people who have a physical and/ or functional disability. This may include working with children on an individual basis or as part of a group. It will also include working in partnership with others who are involved in the child’s care, for example parents and carers, education staff, and other healthcare professionals.
Main duties of the job
(1) To work with individuals/groups of children covering a broad range of ages, from 0 to19, with a range of physical disabilities, disorders, learning difficulties and developmental delay.
(2) Use practical/technical/creative skills to assist in the provision of a flexible child centred programme of therapeutic activities enabling children and young people to participate in activities of daily living, play and access to the school curriculum.
(3) Take responsibility for specified tasks as instructed by the Occupational Therapists in the area of 24 hour postural management including seating, sleep systems and other positioning equipment.
(4) Provide support in the preparation, administration, planning and implementation of specially designed programmes of rehabilitation for both groups and individuals.
(5) To contribute to the overall assessment of patients under the direction of the Occupational Therapist.
(6) Work in a variety of settings including clinics, special schools, mainstream schools, nurseries, short breaks setting, Woodlands Ward and the child’s home.
(7) Responsibility for the training of others, including delivering training.
(8) Delegating tasks to others.

Essential
Essential criteria
- Formal qualification relevant to the post e.g. level 3 NVQ/Diploma in Health and Social Care
- Evidence of practical training or education in a health or social care setting
- Able to demonstrate a good standard of literacy and numeracy
- Previous extensive experience as a rehabilitation assistant/ support worker in a health or social care or education field.
- Experience of work in the community with children with physical/functional disability.
- Previous experience working in a multidisciplinary team in health, social care or education
- Car driver
- Access to a car for work purposes
Desirable criteria
- Basic Computer/word processing qualification
- Level 4 validated education programme e.g. Certificate in Higher Education/ Health and Social Care Diploma
- Experience of teaching and instructing / basic counselling skills
- Experience of working in the NHS
- Experience of working with people with communication and/or learning difficulties
- Knowledge of dealing with difficult situations and handling complaints
