Job overview
The postholder will be expected to provide a supervisory level of medical cover to the Children’s Ward, Special Care Baby Unit, Delivery Unit, and Postnatal Ward as required. You will be expected to conduct ward rounds and assist the Consultants in providing both inpatient and outpatient care as necessary. In addition, you will be expected to actively participate in the departments training programme.
1 day a week you will be teaching and supporting Medical Undergraduates.
Main duties of the job
To take responsibility for clinical supervision and management of the Paediatric service in the following areas:
· Children’s Ward
· Special Care Baby Unit
· Post Natal Ward
· Labour Ward (attending high risk deliveries)
· Children’s Outpatients
· Advisory capacity to the Accident and Emergency Department and some surgical specialities, which deal with children.
Supervise the FY1, FY2, ST1-3 or equivalent grade doctors in clinical and medical managerial tasks.
Provide senior paediatric medical support to other departments such as Accident and Emergency as required and / or when outside the realm of the FY1, FY2, ST1-3 or equivalent grade staff.
To develop a patient management plan including necessary investigations and treatments, fully discussing the implications of these with the parents.
To recognise and address the follow up of ‘abnormal’ investigation results with Consultants and General Practitioners as appropriate.
To collate investigation results for review / discussion with senior medical staff.
To work proactively with medical, nursing and other healthcare colleagues for the development of good working relationships.
Assist with managing babies on SCBU, and communicating information on the condition of these babies to their parents as appropriate.
Deputise for colleagues covering periods of short term sickness (up to 3 days).

Essential criteria
- MBBS or equivalent medical qualification
- Eligible for full registration with the GMC at time of appointment.
- Evidence of achievement of ST3 competencies
- Some previous experience teaching.
Desirable criteria
- MRCPCH or equivalent
- Experience in District General Hospital practice within the NHS

You must have appropriate UK professional registration.
