Job overview

We have an exciting opportunity for a motivated individual to join our Blood Transfusion team as a Band 7 Senior Biomedical Scientist at the Scarborough Hospital Site as part of the Scarborough, Hull, York Pathology Services (SHYPS) Network. 

You must be a Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) Registered Biomedical Scientist, and hold an appropriate post graduate qualification that includes Blood Transfusion speciality (MSc or HSD). Experience of quality management, audit and leadership experience would be advantageous

The Blood Transfusion Laboratory is equipped with Grifols Gel Column Technology and has two Eflexis analysers and a DG Reader for manual card reading.  It has a well established Haemonetics Blood Tracking system in use and successfully delivers remote Electronic issue at its satellite Lab locations.  The Department currently uses Telepath LIMS but is  nearing the end of the implementation and Validation phase of a new LIMS (Winpath Enterprise). 

Main duties of the job

The post holder will take delegated responsibility for day-to-day 
operational matters of the Blood Transfusion section of the department, and deputise for the Chief Biomedical Scientist  on technical matters in their absence. They will supervise, train and develop subordinate staff, 
including Biomedical Scientist (BMS), Trainee Biomedical Scientists, Associate Practitioners  and Medical Laboratory Assistants (MLA)  ensuring that proficiency and competence and personal and professional standards of that group are maintained.

The Post Holder will work closely and alongside senior BMS colleagues at the York site and  to ensure harmonisation of procedures and policies and along with the Chief Biomedical Scientist that MHRA compliance and UKAS accreditation is maintained.

Person specification

Qualifications and Experience

Essential criteria
  • MSc or Equivalent in relevant speciality
  • 'Comprehensive experience and a minimum of 3 years’ experience in a specialist BMS position within the relevant discipline in an UKAS accredited laboratory

Knowledge and Skills

Essential criteria
  • Excellent working knowledge of UKAS and MHRA
Desirable criteria
  • Knowledge of Teaching, training and development of staff to MSc level.
