Job overview

The Patient Flow Coordinator's primary role is to support the Nurse in Charge (NiC), Emergency Physician in Charge (EPiC), and the broader Emergency Department (ED) team in delivering high-quality patient care, while ensuring smooth patient flow through the department by minimising unnecessary delays.

Working under the direction of the NiC, the Patient Flow Coordinator will collaborate with the ED team and manage administrative tasks, liaising with other departments and help patient movement through the department.  By coordinating these efforts, the postholder will contribute to the efficient operation of the ED, ultimately reducing patient journey times and enhancing overall departmental effectiveness.

Main duties of the job

  • ·      Work directly with the ED shift leaders to support the safe and effective flow of patients through the department in line with the 4-hour patient safety standard. This will include having knowledge of all patients in the departments and the care plans for these patients.
  • ·      Monitor performance within the Emergency Department.
  •          Liaise with Admission units and wards with regards to bed requests and discussion potential bed breaches with the bed manager.
  • ·      Highlight to nursing team that bed is ready in a timely manner and ensure that all documentation is ready for patient to transfer to a bed.
  • ·      Be familiar with, and work to, the protocols and policies of the Emergency Department and Trust policies, paying particular attention to the Chaperoning and Infection Control policies.

Essential criteria
  • Must be numerate and literate, GCSE grade C and above or equivalent in English and Maths.
Desirable criteria
  • ECDL or equivalent (or proven working knowledge)

Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office (Word Excel & Outlook)
  • Knowledge of complex of medical terminology
  • Experience of working in a customer focused environment
Desirable criteria
  • Previous experience of NHS administration services
  • Experience of working in a client-driven / NHS environment
  • Experience of using CPD / SystmOne
