Job overview

We were delighted to be chosen as one of seven national pilot projects for integrating mental health support into children and young people’s epilepsy care. This innovative project, which began in March 2023, is focused on the implementation of mental health screening and psychological intervention for children and young people in our region. 

The project seeks to make a real change for children and young people with epilepsy across our ICS and we are looking for a Clinical  Psychologist with a passion for driving change and innovation who can continue the valuable work that has been started on this project (newly qualified Psychologists with strong leadership skills would also be considered for this position). 

You would be working within a team of experienced Clinical Psychologists based at York Hospital. Integral to the post is networking with of CYP services across the ICS. The successful post holder will also hold a clinical caseload to support the wider remit of the paediatric psychology service.  

 The focus of the role is to continue embedding the screening and psychological interventions into routine practice and to support the evaluation of the project through data collection and reporting.

  • Contributing to an NHS England pilot project integrating mental health into epilepsy care for children and young people. 
  • Working within the Paediatric Psychology Team at York Hospital. Providing psychological assessment and intervention for children with physical health conditions.

Experience and Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • • Experience of specialist psychological assessment and treatment of children, young people and families across the full range of care-settings, including outpatient, community, primary care and in patient settings
  • • Experience of working with a wide variety of patient groups, across the whole life course presenting problems that reflect the full range of clinical severity including maintaining a high degree of professionalism in the face of highly emotive and distressing problems, verbal abuse and the threat of physical abuse.

Qualifications and Training

Essential criteria
  • Post-graduate doctoral level training in clinical psychology, (or about to qualify in Sept 2025) including specifically models of child and adolescent psychology, clinical psychometrics and neuropsychology, two or more distinct psychological therapies as accredited by the HCPC.
Desirable criteria
  • • Pre-qualification training and qualifications in research methodology, staff training and/or other fields of applied psychology.
  • • Experience of teaching, training and/or supervision
  • • Experience of working with Clinical Health populations.
  • • Knowledge of legislation in relation to the patient groups.
  • • Hold a current driving license valid in the U.K.

Skills and Abilities

Essential criteria
  • • Skills in the use of complex methods of psychological assessment, intervention and management frequently requiring sustained and intense concentration.
  • • Well-developed skills in the ability to communicate effectively, orally and in writing, complex, highly technical and/or clinically sensitive information to patients, their families, carers and a wide range of lay and professional persons within and outside the NHS
  • • Skills in providing consultation to other professional and non-professional groups
  • • Doctoral level knowledge of research methodology, research design and complex, multivariate data analysis as practiced within the clinical fields of psychology.

Aptitude & Personal Qualities

Essential criteria
  • • Ability to teach and train others, using a variety of complex multi-media materials suitable for presentations within public, professional and academic settings.
  • • Ability to work as a team member and show flexibility and adaptability.
  • • Ability to identify and employ mechanisms of clinical governance as appropriate, to support and maintain clinical practice in the face of regular exposure to highly emotive material and challenging behaviour.
