Job overview

NHFT Secured Services is offering an experienced podiatrist an exciting and unique opportunity to work somewhere completely different – within prison and immigration removal centre (IRC) environment. This post is for 3 days, 22.5 hrs,  a week, working in at least two of the following sites: HMP Peterborough, HMP Woodhill, HMP Bedford, HMP Littlehey and Yarl’s Wood IRC.

Podiatry service is integrated within the healthcare team providing appropriate and timely care for patients with foot pathology. As part of the podiatry team, you will be supported by GPs, nurses, pharmacists, physiotherapists, administrators, and the senior management team, to ensure quality patient care and excellent patient experience.

You will be provided with supervision and mentoring by the clinical lead podiatrist. Mandatory training and other training needs will be identified during the appraisal process to support both your continual professional development and general wellbeing.

Why not come and have a look around and meet some of the team, you would be most welcome. To arrange a visit please send an email to [email protected]

Main duties of the job

To provide exceptional podiatry care, you will assess, diagnose, and provide management for a wide range of patients. Your case load will include complex patients with multiple medical conditions and co-morbidities including: diabetes, inflammatory arthritis, dermatological diseases, terminal illness, musculoskeletal disorders, and nail pathologies.

To manage patients with:

Diabetes high risk foot health and associated comorbidities

Circulatory and neurological deficit and reduced tissue viability

         Musculoskeletal deformities and pain

         Complex lower limb biomechanics

·         Ingrowing toenails and other nail pathology requiring nail surgery

·         Mental health diagnoses, dementia, PTSD, bipolar, schizophrenia

·         Substance use disorders

·         Terminal illness, requiring end of life care

The post holder will have an identified caseload of patients, the majority of which will be in the above categories. The wider healthcare team is available to support clinical interventions and patient management plans, to ensure optimal patient care within the prison setting.

The progressive nature of podiatry in these environments means that you will continually champion foot health awareness and strengthen links with your healthcare colleagues to ensure the patients receive best possible care.

Working for our organisation

HMP Woodhill in Milton Keynes is a high security adult male prison. HMP Peterborough is a Category B prison for adult males and females.  HMP Littlehey is a Category C prison for adult males convicted of a sexual offence.

NHFT is an integrated primary care and mental health Trust, providing physical, mental health and specialty services in both hospital settings and out in the community. Because we put the person at the centre of all we do, we focus on delivering care that is as easy to access as possible. This means many of our services can be provided at home, work or in schools.
