Senior Clinical Psychologist

Band 8a

Due to increased investment in our services, we are pleased to advertise several posts for Senior Clinical Psychologists to join our Clinical Psychology service for Older People within Northamptonshire Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust (NHFT). We are looking to recruit to two full-time posts and one part-time post (0.5wte) line managed within the psychology service, based  within our Older People’s Community Mental Health Teams (OPCMHTs) based in Daventry, Northampton or Rushden. Each OPCMHT will have an Assistant Psychologist recruited from April 2022.

These services offer psychological assessment, formulation and intervention for people over the age of 65 years with dementia, as well as those experiencing distress from emotional disorders or psychosis. There are also opportunities to be involved in staff training, service development and case formulation with teams.

The 4 OPCMHTs in the county work alongside the 4 co-located Memory Assessment Services (MAS), each of which has a full-time Assistant Psychologist running extended cognitive assessments and a comprehensive group programme. The 2 in-patient units are based in Kettering and Northampton, each with 2 wards for Older People and supported by an in-patient Clinical Psychologist. We are also currently advertising for 2 Senior Clinical Psychologists within our Liaison Psychiatry Services for Older People at our general hospitals.

The OPCMHT post holders will work within enthusiastic multidisciplinary teams to:

  • Offer assessment, formulation and intervention for a wide range of presentations using both individual, family and group approaches
  • Offer Case Formulation and training sessions for staff teams to extend psychological ways of working
  • Offer enhanced neuropsychological assessment for more complex presentations
  • Support the development of a Structured Clinical Management pathway for older people with personality disorder
  • Support the development of Meeting Centres for post-diagnostic support for people with dementia and their families across the county
  • Jointly supervise the Assistant Psychologist (with the Principal Clinical Neuropsychologist) in the co-located MAS for short-term CBT-based intervention & personal development
  • Recruit an Assistant Psychologist for the OPCMHT from April 2022
  • Collaborate in using outcome information to inform and develop good practice
  • Contribute to service user forums and audit projects to collect data that can inform Trust management, commissioners, users and other relevant stakeholders of the needs of this population

Joining this service can offer:

  • Supervision from the Principal Clinical Neuropsychologist as well as Consultant Clinical Psychologist
  • Support to develop skills in supervision and teaching through joint supervision and lecturing for Clinical Psychology Trainees at both the University of Leicester and University of Oxford
  • Opportunities for innovative joint work with 3rd sector organisations
  • Training in Structured Clinical Management
  • Potential for training in other therapeutic approaches, such as EMDR
  • Links and participation in the BPS Faculty of Psychology for Older People (FPOP)
  • The opportunity to work within a well integrated Psychology Service that meets  for monthly CPD, case audits and organisational support

We would like to recruit staff who are committed and dedicated to working with Older People. It is essential that applicants have a Doctorate in Clinical Psychology or equivalent registration with the HCPC. Experience of working with similar clinical populations would be beneficial.

We will also consider applications from candidates seeking a Band 7 Clinical Psychologist role with preceptorship, and would offer appropriate support for any newly qualified staff. We may also be able to combine these posts with other Clinical Psychology positions within NHFT for applicants wishing a full-time position across a variety of specialties.

Successful applicants will be invited for interview in July.

Applicant requirements

You must have appropriate UK professional registration.

Applications from job seekers who require sponsorship to work in the United Kingdom (UK) are welcome and will be considered alongside all other applications. Please note that from January 2021, to work in the UK all candidates who are not UK or Republic of Ireland (RoI) nationals require sponsorship unless you have permission to work via another route. Non UK / RoI candidates wishing to apply can self-assess the likelihood of obtaining a Certificate of Sponsorship here. It is vital that you provide full and accurate details of your current immigration status on the application form. Overseas applicants applying for entry clearance into the UK must present a criminal record certificate from each country they have resided in continuously or cumulatively for 12 months or more in the past 10 years. Guidance can be found here. Not everyone needs a ‘Skilled Worker’ visa. If you are applying for a vacancy in health or adult social care, check if you’re eligible to apply for the Health and Care Worker visa instead. It’s cheaper to apply for and you do not need to pay the annual immigration health surcharge

This post is subject to the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974 (Exceptions) Order 1975 (Amendment) (England and Wales) Order 2020 and it will be necessary for a submission for Disclosure to be made to the Disclosure and Barring Service.
